NEW RX7 coming out?! Verified by Road and Track

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....ber=4&preview=

I found this on Road and Track, it talked about the new RX7 that might/will be coming out. The mazdaspeed version will spill out 300 hp.. yikes....

I will definitely get the RX7 if it comes out in 2005.

meh, this is nothing new. the rumours are years old, and as not very much is speculated, nothing much has changed. but true?? quite possibly.

Well, perhaps it will hit the states with maybe 270 hp (after Mazda gets the correct hp figure out) - lol

Again, this is being moved, as it is not about the RX-8.

Road & Track's rumours of late have not been very accurate.

A new RX-7 Concept was supposed to have been shown at the recent Tokyo Motor Show, but Mazda decided to hold it back. Mazda has not yet signed off on proceeding with a new RX-7. They're focussing right now on the new RX-8, Mazda3, and the next gen NC Miata (remotely related to the Ibuki concept shown at Tokyo), so it seems they decided to hold off on showing the RX-7 concept.

Another factor is that the RX-8 is selling very well, and their Renesis engine assembly plant is operating at full capacity to supply the RX-8. Right now, they couldn't make enough engines support any RX-7 production!

Regards,
Gordon

It is all speculation. Motor Trend released a blurb saying that Mazda passed on producing the 7. I hope that is wrong, but it shows you that everything is still just rumors.

Although I admit it would be cool if a new RX-7 came out, I'm not sure why Mazda would do it from a business perspective. You'd think RX-7 sales would cannibalize Mazda's sales of the RX-8. How many of us would have bought an RX-8 if there was an RX-7 out? Especially if, as Road & Track reports, it's in the same $30k-$35k range. Then they'd also have to re-tool one of their factories to build an additional model, devote additional marketing resources to the new RX-7, and force dealers to provide additional floor space for another car.

It seems like the only way they could really do it would be to follow Nissan's G35/350z business model, where the cars all use most of the same parts, and the differences are mostly tuning and/or cosmetic. If I remember correctly, it sounds like they're going to build the next gen Miata on the RX-8 chassis. If they build the new RX-7 on the same chassis, then maybe it would work.

It's official

Mazda has kept us guessing for quite some time: as to whether a new RX-7 will be introduced and whether the miata replacement will use that name. What platform will it be built on?
I just read a copy of Automotive news that quoted Mazda's head of planning (or something like that) saying finally and officially that the next Miata will be built on the RX-8s platform. He went on to state that a lot of money had been spent on this platform and that it would only make sense to build other vehicles on it; also mentioning a new RX-7 and a convertible version of the same.

Since the '8 is selling so well right now, maybe Mazda will hold off on a new '7 to keep the two models from competing with one another. After interest in the 8 wanes (2-3 years?) they will spark new interest by rolling out the 7. Just a possibility, but common marketing technique.

Absolutely. These new vehicles are still a ways away. From what I hear and read the 3s are here and they will be followed by the other versions of the 6.Word has it that the Mazdaspeed Miata is due perhaps after that (Turbocharged). The restyled MPVs are already at dealerships. A new MPV, Miata and RX-7 would probably be due as 06 models.

I would like to see another 7, but I don't see it happening, unless the car will cost about 50K. The reason I say this is because the 8 is already a very light and small car - with seemingly great potential.

Why "muddy the waters" by adding a similar powered car for just a little bit more money? I understand the two vs. four seat argument, but the 8 already provides the advantages of a car with two seats.

If they can get 250 HP out of the Renesis for the RX7, why not for the RX8?

The article said nothing about a bigger engine. "...a base model powered by the RX-8's Renesis rotary producing 250 bhp. "

well my dealership claims that mazda will release an rx-7 in 05. I laughed at this when the salesman told me. He said that they are going to do it to be competetive with the supposive new toyota supra and the new gto......Ha i am really skeptic of this guy..after all he is a salesman.

I haven't read that article, but it's been reported quite widely that any future RX-7 is quite likely to use a 1.5 or 1.6 litre version of the Renesis, rather than the RX-8's 1.3 litre version. Still Renesis as you quote, but larger displacement and producing around 280 - 300 hp.

Gordon

Question Renesis hp ratings

Medcina, when Chrisbert asked why they couldn't get 250 hp out of the 8 when they could with the 7, I think you said "because the engine is bigger". Did you mean that the 7 has a larger displacement than the 8? How much? And were you talking about the prior 7's or the new (I read 300 hp :D) 7's that are supposedly on the drawing boards that no-one seriously expects to see for at least three years, if ever? :o

An amped version of the Renesis RX-8 engine is likely to power RX-7. With wider and stiffer rotor housings, a higher redline, and displacement out to about 1.6 litres, Mazda reckons on output of around 225 kW in normally aspirated form. It appears there will be no turbocharged version. Fear not, though, as for the first time ever, Mazda is working on a supercharged rotary option for RX-7.

i dont like how uninformed that first line of that article is
"It's nigh on a decade since the RX-7 last rolled down the production line in Hiroshima"
its been little over 2 years since an rx7 rolled off that line!

From a design standpoint the drawing looks ok--but whatever the successor looks like it has some huge shoes to fill to replace the FD. The FD is one of the most beautiful cars to ever come out of Japan--not even mentioning the performance.
