that means the advertising is working. people are talking about it...and by word of mouth, i am sure one of the haters will have someone overhear them talking about 'this new eclipse commercial' and will get them to buy one.

An RX-7 owner may not buy the new eclipse, but that owner's cousin might. or friend. or father. or whoever. and all thanks to hearing about 'this stupid commercial where my almighty RX7 bows down to this new model Eclipse'. Guess what, that RX7 owner may have just advertised for Mitsubishi to a potential buyer.

 

well considering the FD is pretty different from the eclipse besides the fact that they come from the land of the rising sun, i would say its not that far fetched of the idea. oh i forgot most FD owners know what a piece of **** mitsubishis are(except for evos) and they would never buy an eclipse. my bad.

I think it's a bit too late to salvage the life of the Mitsu... it's all up to Nissan to carry the torch forward. I didn't mention the Mazda brand only because it's still not an overwhelming mainstream car company... needs a bit more models under their line to be considered in the ranks of Nissan and Toyotas. Too bad Toyotas haven't had the Supra class out in awhile.

 

what about honda? honda is more mainstream than nissan, and mazda is probably one of the larger of the "small" brands

 

Honda is losing against the Scion economy cars... and their sports cars (s2k) are now being outsold by the 350z/WRX crowds. Their Civic Si later this year better start catching up to the Scions...

 

the scion will still outsell the Si bigtime because the civic Si is a much more niche market compared to the tC which sells the majority to non enthusiasts(ie it sells well) even though the civic Si is one of the most mainstream performance cars. and of course the s2k sells like ****, even though it's a good car and the general public look on paper and see nissan 350z 287 hp and Honda S2000 240hp what is 99% of the public gonna buy? besides the point the general public is pretty bad when it comes to buying good cars because the s2000 is a superior performance car compared to the 350z

 

The hp has little to do with why the Z sells better, the main reason would be the impracticality of the S2K. The Z can easily be a year round car and many people that own them are not hardcore enthusiasts, the S2K is more of a fun toy for strict enthusiasts.

 

I disagree, part of why the s2k is so alluring is its ability to be a daily driver, but once vtech kicks in, its a different animal. My brother has one, many people have them who are not strict enthusiasts. I'd say your'e right that the z sells better because its not a convertible, but part of the critical acclaim of the s2k is that it can tear up a track, but also be a daily driver.

Maybe not in North America because no one knew how to work on them properly. I think they are very reliable if you keep it stock. It's when ppl up the boost without tunning. N/A is still far behind in tunning cars, especially rotary cars. The FD screams quality imo. Mazda wouldn't have kept the same car for 10 years if it wasn't.

The eclipse has a loyal following in the states and the car will sell well if they will have a convertable model. In Canada, mitsubishi is non-existent. I think the commercial is spot on. Definately echos to the right demographic.

 

Many many of those blown engines were on unmodded cars... When you have to do reliability mods to a car to reduce the likelyhood of the engine going every 30-50k miles there is a problem.

 

the lack of knowledge was the problem. Many owners never topped up the oil and used cheap gas. the engine is reliable but only if it's treated right.

 

Actually the NSX to me is far more practical as a daily driver, cost aside. I don't know how big of a guy your brother is but I'd have a hard time sitting in an S2K in stop and go traffic every day. I'd also have a hard time having a convertible of any type in in the Milwaukee winters.

 

So 10+ years later when guys are advertising their FD with only 3k miles on the new engine is that because they still haven't figured out it needs premium and oil added every now and then? Find me one FD still on the original engine and I'll find you 5 that are on its second or third.

 

most if not all are not stock. I have a friend that has a completely stock 94 with 130k kilometers and on it's original motor. Yes, it's not an NSX but I wouldn't blame all the blown motors on engineering. It just isn't a daily driver sports car.

 

I'd love an nsx. I'd love both. My point was you said the s2k is just a toy for serious enthusiasts. I think most of the automotive world would agree that its appeal is that it is both a roadster that perfroms on the track, that you can use as your daily driver (Milwaukee aside) . I don't think you'd be able to go 4 wheeling in an NsX either

The s2k in my opinion has a way nicer ride than the 350z, i think the z sells more because the 2K is a convertible, not because the s2k is some enthusiasts ride. Many people, old, male female have them. Sales are down probably cause its a convertible and its a few years in its production....
