new mitsu commercial

Anyone see the new mitsu eclipse commercial. I just saw it last night. They have a rust colored eclipse driving around town and it meets up with what looks like (it's at night) a black or dark blue FD rx7 at an intersection, and the FD close's it's front headlights and the front of the car lowers like it's on hydrolics, giving the appearance that it's BOWING to the eclipse. Next the mitsu pulls into a parking lot and all the cars in the lot bow to it, some of them nice sports cars. :(

My first reaction was of total disbelief and I even yelled B.S. at the tv. If mitsu is trying to compare this car to an FD, then those buyers are in for a big disappointment.

rx8wannahave 06-21-2005 07:47 AM

WHAT!!!! That's pretty arrogant especially with what the new Mitsu is offering...

Note: I know it's just a commercial...don't flame for the arrogant thing...lol

The FD is 7 times the car the new Eclipse is and it actually looks good too. Wow...the person who thought up that that commercial must have been high at the time.

If they would have made it RWD then more people could have overlooked it's odd looks. Kinda nice...but kinda weird looking too. Also...so far the handling numbers are sadan-like...I mean are they "trying" to make a sports car or what?

BWheeler981 06-21-2005 07:47 AM

I saw the same commercial and agree with your comments, however, I wish Mazda would have thought of it! You have to admit it's creative.

pcimino 06-21-2005 07:48 AM

Mitsubishi is still in business? They've shown they can make some decent products, but they always have trouble attracting buyers. The loss of the AWD on the new Eclipse will probably kill it.

rx8wannahave 06-21-2005 07:54 AM

I know...why o why did they ever get rid of the AWD!!!

I know it did not sell as much but maybe if they only offerd either a low power FWD or a high powered AWD that would not have been the case.

No disrespect...but FWD sucks for a TRUE sports car, in my opinion.

I have the the july issue of Automobile and they have a comparison story on the eclipse. Do they compare it to the 350Z, the RX-8, S2000, Mustang GT, Sti...nope, the comparison group was the Acura rsx-s, a mustang V6, and the mini cooper s.
Even the mag doesn't see this as anything more then a mid level sports car.

Let's see what some of the comments were:
" the eclpise is a champion of in-your-face style that challenges you with a futuristic shape. But once up close, the presentation unravels abit. It's 2.9 inches longer, 3.3 in. wider, and 1.9 inches taller then the car it replaces, and the small car proportions don't seem to fit the larger galant-sedan based platform quite right.

That's because the eclpise is really a big car beneath the small skin.

We must confess that looking good while driving fast is really important to us. And the eclpise GT is a quick car, as our test prove. And yetthe eclipse really isn't the best of sporty cars. It's too heavy, a whopping 3540 pounds, even heavier then the mustang.

The mitsu eclpise GT makes a big statement in a car that's just right for everyday driving, but it's a little too big for real driving excitement."

And how did the eclipse do in comparison to the others in this group. It finished last. This car is quick in a straight line but when it comes to a sports car or even a sporty car, it seems it's not even a good mid-level one...

Wurmfist 06-21-2005 08:20 AM

I saw one in person the other day. They look like a morph of an RX-8 and a 350Z. Seriously, I think they did it. Does anyone else agree?

vectorwolf 06-21-2005 09:34 AM

Heavier than a Mustang? And can't even outpace the V-6 model? Pretty sad. While I'll openly admit that, after having owned one, I'll never buy another Mitsubishi product, I'll have to commend them for at least giving a good effort. They've gone back to the more popular 2nd-gen styling, but really lost everything else... They need a light, nimble, moddable car if they're wanting to regain their status. A sedan in sports car clothing just isn't going to do it...

rx8wannahave 06-21-2005 11:19 AM

Ouch...that was a harsh review.

I think they need to dump the past and embrace a new car from the tires to the tranny. For the love of GOD are we regressing in car design or progressing?

Why do car companies feel they have to travel back in time? If you go back to the 50/60's you will see that their cars were so sexy because they kept thinking of the future look...yet now we keep looking back to make copies of the past-future.

It's sad really...so many cars have become econo boxes looking alike in one way or the other. Where is the future-looking cars we all dreamed about when we were young?

Only a few cars (enter RX8 here) and a few car companies seem to be able to give us nice looking cars that are unique and sexy without the need of bringing past designs from the dead.

VelociRedBeast 06-21-2005 11:22 AM

....I'd buy the new eclipse GT..

army_rx8 06-21-2005 11:27 AM

^boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :p

poor mistubishi...aren't they trying to sell their plants in north america to anyone who will buy them?

LNWLF 06-21-2005 02:43 PM

The FD would never bow to the new Eclipse GT, but the rest of the cars in the sporty FWD class should (RSX-S, Celica GTS, Tiburon GT).

BlueEyes 06-21-2005 02:45 PM

I would rather an RSX-S than the eclipse any day of the week.

Ike 06-21-2005 03:16 PM

You guys have just proven that it's an effective ad campaign.

Also, maybe the FD was bowing to the reliability of the new Eclipse ;) :p

As for me, I'd take an SRT-4, RSX-S, and maybe even a Cobalt SS over the Eclipse. The day DSM died is the day I stopped caring about the new Eclipse.

guy321 06-21-2005 03:22 PM

I just traded my car in today for a new eclipse GT!! WOOHOO SO FAST!

No, an effective ad campaign would encourage you to buy the car not trash it. It just goes to show that Mitsubishi's advertising is as lacks as it's design team.

My brother works for MMMA in it's Normal,Il. plant and he says that at one time Mitsubishi had approx. 25,000,00 new cars sitting on one of their production lots and that roughly 25-35% of those needed continued work before they could be released to dealers lots. He stated that Mitsubishi was more concerned about it's overall production numbers and less with the quality of the post-production product.

Usually just getting noticed is a good start, to have people remember most of the commercial after seeing it just once I'd say it's pretty damn effective. This ad wasn't and isn't targetted for either of us or anyone else posting on this thread, we've already decided what we think about the car.

crimson-rain 06-21-2005 03:47 PM

Eclipse GSX where art thou???

As far as other cars bowing to it ... well I haven't driven it yet but I've seen up close and personal ($5 dollars it sucks). Man that thing is high. You'll get a nose bleed sitting up there. The looks I don't care for and it just doesn't have a sporty look to me. It looks kind of like an e-long-gated-VW Bug. I really don't see the attraction.

Now that I think about it, I believe most of the cars in the parking lots were subbies... ;) :p

Not really...I have not seen it myself but by the description...wow, not even Subies deserve that disrespect...lol :p :)

kuleto 06-21-2005 10:43 PM

The Rsx-S would take it in the twisties anyday! :)

jaguargod 06-21-2005 11:17 PM

99% of people who see that commercial won't even know that the car bowing is an RX-7, or how much it could outperform the Eclipse. That is probably why they did it and didn't worry about backlash. It is sad that the Eclipse has come to this. I remember when the first Eclipse came out. It was one of the most popular and coveted cars around. The second generation was really nice too, but it went downhill from there.

rx8wannahave 06-22-2005 07:04 AM

Yeah...it's sad to see a sports car/sporty car die like that...I really liked the AWD 1st & 2nd generation. Heck...I like the 3rd generation better than this one too.

If you want to save the Eclipse...bring back AWD or with this new engine make it RWD.

My girl has a '01 spyder GT. It's not a bad car to drive. I really only say that because it's a convirtable, and has a little bit of spunk. For the price we paid for it though, there isn't much that can touch it. Ofcourse if you want a real sports car, you have to make some sacrafices. What would I buy, well, I own an 8. A convirtable and saving a few bucks is by no means a compromise to a poorer driving experience. Now if they could make the 8 into a convirtable, now that would be fun. But that aint gonna happen.
So far I've had to buy new rims because they were they bent if you hit a pebble in the road, I had to re wire the headlights because the harnesses burnt out, and they wanted $200 each for the upgraded harnesses. And now I'm trying to track down a vaccuum leak somewhere in the intake system. As far a reliability, I would rank the Eclipse V6 somewhere around a 3 out of 10.

dmorales 06-22-2005 10:26 PM

I just saw the commercial and got on to say how much I was insulted! But I guess Iwas too slow and got beat to it. :(

NO ROTARY would ever bow to an eclipse! NEVER!
