I really enjoyed having my 2000 Miata SE... might try to buy another one...
I would probably get the 1999 10th Anniversary Miata or "10AE". Had the upgraded suspension, limited slip diff, alcantara seats, Nardi steering wheel and shift ****... everybody used to say "but you have chrome wheels" and I would have to correct them. They're polished, and it doesn't add an ounce of weight to the car.
Only problem it had (a bunch of '99 Miatas had this problem for a particular VIN range) was an engine bearing that was the incorrect part that failed prematurely. Most of them were recalled and fixed. It would just be something to look for if you bought one.

Some are priced at about 6-8k..
OK well when you are looking at the Z3s make sure they are not about to crack in half first. lol look it up. They had a problem with cracking. Also maintenance costs on them are even more then the 8.

I was in a very similar situation, I made a poor financial decision when I bought my 2006 rx-8 brand new with no money down.
Two years later I wasn't making quite as much as I had been, and the payments + gas + insurance were raping me a new one. I was spending over $1,200/mo on my vehicle when I decided to let it go.
Worked out pretty well in the end: I'm driving an 05 Honda Accord which is boring but it cut my payment, fuel costs, and insurance almost in half.
I was concerned because I had over $8k in negative equity on my rx-8: car was worth about $12k and I owed about $20k.
However, car dealers are really desperate right now to unload inventory.
I ended up owing no more than I did before, with a much lower payment, vastly reduced fuel costs, and somewhat reduced insurance.
The lesson I think I learned is that it makes some sense to have a nice, new daily driver and a SEPARATE sports car that you pay cash for and keep as your toy.
