Well, I like to mess with my partner, so I went and asked him about his $5K decal:

You're right - he did originally think he was getting a painted on stripe. Apparently the decal is attached to the car before the clear coat is applied, and the Ferrari paint people "sand" or bevel the edge of the decal, so it virtually lays flat to the car finish - no lip that you can detect with your finger.

He has a Ferrari acquaintance who had the stripe done aftermarket (by a high end body shop) and the shop found it was much, much harder than originally thought to do.

And, he claims, while it is virtually impossible to feel the "ridge" from the decal on his car, you can definitely feel it on the stripe the other guy had done (and it was way more than a "few hundred" bucks by the time they got finished).

Personally, I rather like the stripe - decal or not.

I think the stripe makes the car look even better than it otherwise would have, it's just too bad that Ferrari told the owners that it was handpainted when the only paint on the thing was the clearcoat. They did do such a quality job with it that no one could tell it was a vinyl stripe until the owner opens up the hood and feels the end of the stripe, so it's not all bad. How does that Tubi exhaust sound? Must be mean as hell, and loud enough to make your ears bleed Your partner has one amazing car, and I wish him luck with it.

Hi there Poor College -

He says thanks (we're "working" late) and says there is a sound clip of the Tubi exhaust over at www.tubistyleusa.com -

He says not quite "ear bleed" but it does get your attention!

Be sure to tell the man about www.ferrarichat.com, we have over 10,000 members and are the largest owners and enthusiasts forum on the web. All of the people there are EXTREMELY knowledgable and are good to talk to just like our guys here on RX8Club.

The sounds that come from this car will make you weak in the knees. Check out this video (about 6 minutes long) of the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. It is the absolute best video i have ever seen, even better than the Enzo video they did. TRUST ME, it is WORTH the download!!

On the subject of ridiculous accessory pricing for a stripe, did you guys know that here in Australia, you can replace the engine cover with clear perspex when you order a Lamborghini Gallardo?

The cost of showing off your V10 engine?

Try AUD$22000.

Oh by the way, hot Ferrari!

If I did own one, I'd be the only one to know if it is aftermarket or not. Because anyone who put their hand on it to find out would have it immediatly cut off!!!! Sweet ride by the way.

Did you know, we here in the USA have the same option when ordering a Gallardo!

The car is beautiful, and the stripe doesn't ruin it...but is anyone else thinking the stripe is very much not their cup of tea?

I love racing stripes on a lot of cars...but I have to agree with you. IMO Ferrari's are meant to be red, white, or black. No decals. But while they are at it, maybe they should have a version painted in thirds...red white and green! Then they could charge an extra hundred grand for it and everyone would know its Italian!

Incorrect

The stripe is painted at the factory under the clearcoat...

Porsche is nice, but it's not a Ferrari,,,

That Stradale is just not my taste; I do like the 15" ceramic rotors, they squeek worse than the RX-8's rotors. My dad's buddy (the one that has the black enzo), has one of them and I got a chance to drive it at Gingerman.
I drove a CS and a 575 at the recent Ferrari Challenge RAlly in Palm Springs. The 575 is easier to drive fast, but the sound of the CS's engine barking right behind your ears is intoxicating! Surprisingly, the 360, 575 and new 612 are amazingly pleasant and useable in every day driving conditions.

Last, although I drive these cars all the time, I always look forward to returning to my RX-8. It's one of those cars that trancends price -- I'd like it just as much if it was $50k...

Read the link. 360CS owners have found that the stripe is a vinyl sticker underneath the factory painted (maybe hand painted to ensure a quality, seamless job and justify the marketing?) clear coat. If you had bothered to read this thread in its entirety, you would notice that Riccio's partner reported the same thing. Yes, it's marketed as hand painted, but the colored parts of the stripe are vinyl.
