LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The greatest Olympian in history is returning to China, this time as a brand spokesman for Mazda.
U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the summer games in Beijing, has signed a seven-figure deal to endorse the new Mazda 6 model in a series of ad campaigns and personal appearances.
His pact with Los Angeles-based DMG Entertainment, a division of Chines media, lobbying and entertainment group DMG, could be the largest single sponsorship deal for a Western celebrity in China's history.
The campaign will be unveiled during the first half of the year; the deal does not include Hong Kong.
Phelps already has deals with such firms as Speedo, Visa, and Rosetta Stone. He was driving a Land Rover when he was arrested for drunk driving in 2004.

LOL Alfy... BTW just saw a new black Mazda 6 at lunch on the streets - very good looking car - made the Camry and Accord (along with the rest of the sedans) sitting at the intersection with us look downright dowdy and dated.

REPORT: Mazda has Michael Phelps apologize to China's children on video
REPORT: Mazda has Michael Phelps apologize to China's children on video
Michael Phelps is a 12-gold-metal-winning superstar who has struck gold by inserting himself in all manners of advertising. Phelps is also a big deal in China, where he won eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics.
The swimming superstar even has a $1 million deal with Mazda for the China market, an arrangement that hit a rough spot recently when Phelps was caught on camera smoking marijuana from a bong. The Phelps advertising machine is now in damage-control mode, with the Chinese culture less tolerant for such law breaking than we are in the U.S. Phelps knows this, and has put together a video apology at the behest of Mazda to show his humility in front of the Chinese people. Hit the jump to view the embedded video. Is it just us, or does Phelps look like he's having trouble keeping his eyes open? He must be saving his energy for his next victory in the pool.

Alfy, You Win
but seriously speaking, M.P. has nowhere to go in the US now since the "incident", almost all companies that Sponsored him has canceled the contract, including Kellogs and Rosetta Stone.
In China, no one gives a rat *** about his smoke weed crap, they just know that "oh that white boy swims fast !", so yeah he has a market in China. China is one of the biggest market now so hehe, he made the right choice.

Seriously speaking, last time when I was there, about a year something ago, I was at Aunt's place. OMFG they're like money is not even a factor for them, just think of it, they think LV is "cheap", talk about REAL LV. So.
You see BMWs 7 series, AMG SLK every freaking where in GuangZhou. Oh yes I think Hong Kong has most Ferraris on earth.
so ...

That means you know close to nothing about China, other than the "garbage" reports from America's media

On the serious note, yes i've probably seen more Lambos and Ferrari's in China (GuangZhou, Shanghai, Beijing, HK) than here in the US. Audi's are quite popular there also.
