I would buy it at $50k, so I guess that ends the "nobody" argument.

9krpmrx8 04-19-2016 02:16 PM

50k for a Mazda? Nonsense. It will sell as well as the KIA K900 did. Generally people who buy high end cars don't dip into the lower brands. My boss is a good example, we were talking about the K900 when it came out and he had no clue what a KIA was and just could not understand cross shopping an S class to one.

olddragger 04-19-2016 03:46 PM

Some of you may remember me. Been running corvette z06's the past few years, still am----BUT I have been waiting.
Yes I would pay ( no I am not rich)$50K for the RX vision IF some questions I have, are answered with the production model. For a rotary to met todays performance levels it will almost demand at least a 9 to 1 power ratio. Can Mazda do it? I continue to watch....and wait.

Denny! What's up man?

gwilliams6 04-20-2016 04:49 AM

My 1993 FD GT loaded was around $38,000 list price, and no one was getting them for less than list when new, demand was too high, supply too low. So a RX Vision in the middle to high 40k range, with top performance is not unrealistic as they shoot for the Cayman market.

Your boss sounds like a stereotypical MBA, know-nothing, middle-management prick.
Doesn't he know that all the middle-management pricks are driving Audi A8's these days? :mdrmed:

There was no such thing as an FD "GT".
Demand was only high in 1993, and only high relative to the very low supply. The FD was really a limited production car.
By 1994 supply was still tiny, but easily exceeded demand. Stories like that told on the RX-7 Lemon Site had started getting out.
They were still selling 95's well into '96 because nobody was buying them. (I didn't by my CYM R1 until 1998, but it wasn't new. ;))

200.mph 04-20-2016 06:29 AM

holy shit od shows up????? how ya been?

wankel, gwilliams knows everything about every rotary ever. haventy you heard he has 1,000,000,000 rotary miles and has owned everything. how dare you question him

olddragger 04-20-2016 12:53 PM

Hey Guys!! A few remember those days!
Been wrestling with c6 zo6's for the past 3 yrs or so. man these cars are beasts. Frigging scary. with minimal mods little over 500rwhp in a 3100lb car with all the conveniences.
But I do miss the rotary and the mazda rx8 chassis. Just something about it. Its more fun than the vette. Yep I said it.
to join the conversation....Agree what is mazdas attempt? Well to me if you look at the RX vision it is pretty obvious!
I agree--no 1/4 mile stop light to stop light stuff. I don't think it will ever be that type of car. BUT I would fail to understand why they couldn't put at least 350 flywheel h/p in it? The new engine should be able to obtain that with just a very low--- 6-8 lbs of boost.
Weight? Agreed---with materials available today and the price range of 50K a sub 3k lb car should be easily obtainable. Now if they can just give us an 8 speed dct with it, reduce drive train losses---then I will put my money down!
Hope the production car will give us a little more rearward visibility than the concept seems to have.
Good to see yall still here!

200.mph 04-20-2016 01:31 PM

no way od. no stick no sale. btw have you heard form levi?

Jedi54 04-20-2016 03:25 PM

Why? So you can see all the Corvettes you leave in the dust? :ylsuper:

Welcome back, OD. :beer05:

gwilliams6 04-21-2016 06:26 AM

My 1993 FD was a "touring" model, yes not a GT. In 1993, three North American models were offered; the "base", the touring, and the R models. The touring FD included a sunroof, fog lights, leather seats, a rear window wiper and a Bose Acoustic Wave system. And yes the early 93's were in short supply and high demand, and fully loaded touring models listed for around $38,000. I only spoke about the initial 93's, which is what I owned and mine was in brilliant red. A buddy of mine, SCCA champion racer Dave Rosenblum of ICY Racing (in Philadelphia) bought an "R" model with stiffer suspension, no sunroof and different seats and in yellow.

Bought my 93 FD touring from Z&W Mazda in Princeton ,New Jersey. Z & W Mazda was at one time owned by my friend and IMSA RX-3 and later Camel Lights rotary racer Pierre Honeger. Also bought my 1990 RX7 Turbo II from Pierre. Pierre worked and raced with our friend and his Camel lights rotary car builder Charles Hurst (near New Hope, Pa.). Charles Hurst had crewed and raced with RX7 championship racer Walt Bohren early in his rotary career. For many years Charles Hurst would be my local mechanic for my race-prepped, Racing Beat built 400 + HP modified turbo gen one RX7.

200.mph 04-21-2016 06:54 AM

g i think you mean r1 as the 93 fd goes. it was lighter and han a few upgrades. i almost bought a black one last year

gwilliams6 04-21-2016 07:32 AM

Yes it was a R1 model. lighter, stiffer. Racer Dave Rosenblum (from Philly) , bought his after trying my touring model. Dave had SCCA and IMSA success driving VW Golf's, FD RX7s and Subaru WRX STi's . His ICY racing (Inner City Youth) team took poor inner city Philly High School youth and made them his race crew. They got to learn new skills, toured the country (many had never been out of Philly) and they crewed and won a national championship along the way in RX7s. Their major sponsorship was Valvoline, whose "Just Say No to Drugs" campaign was appropriate as Dave was a recovered drug user. Yes SCCA and IMSA sanctioned these teens to be pit crew, and they competed and won against adult crews. . I did a feature story on them for both my Philadelphia Inquirer Newspaper and Road and Track magazine, and did a load of race photography for them at tracks all across the US and Canada.

R1s don't have sunroofs. Only touring / PEP.

olddragger 04-21-2016 10:43 AM

lol leaving corvettes in the dust! That may not be true but when I was running my DD Pettit RX8
I made a lot of the street driven corvettes very nervous. Did pass a few--especially in the braking zones and in quick transitions.
I do hear from levi from time to time. He still has my car--got the weigh down to 25-2600lbs if I am not mistaken. Carbon fiber roof and a bunch of other stuff etc.
As G Williams, myself and a LOT of others can tell you---power is by far not everything. But-- I still hope Mazda doesn't forget some of the other stuff --like electronic diffs, dct's, aerodynamics( did you know the c6 zo6 is faster from 0-150mph than the c7 zo6--why?--yes aerodynamics--the c7 has a LOT more downforce), rev matching( on stick trans) , LIGHT sprung weight on the corners AND REDUCING DRIVE TRAIN LOSS.
exciting times yes. Hurry up Mazda I aint getting any younger

Nah he isn't a prick, just a doctor who is the son of a doctor so he has just never had to buy cars on a budget.

Only an opinion piece, but...

Sorry, rotary fans, Mazda's RX Vision probably won't happen - Autoblog

I do have a problem with this statement from Mazda...

"It's smart to keep developing it in back rooms and to keep the idea on the public's mind."

Sure, then when they keep teasing everyone and stringing them along, then never deliver, they lose credibility and people take their money elsewhere, which most RX-8 owners already have.

delhi 05-24-2016 12:55 PM

Fine. But don't let that sexy body go to waste. Drop a turbo-charged Skyactive-piston in there.

I applaud Mazda for trying hard not to get sucked into automotive homogeneity.

I'd gladly take a hardcore sports car from Mazda, even without a rotary.

I've been saying for a while that they need to revive the '8 chassis with a turbo-4 (Hello, SkyActiv 2.5T). Hell, go crazy and revive their agreement with Ford and put the 3.5 Ecoboost in it. Just call it the SkyActiv6T for the MazdaSpeed version. Just make the stock tune profile for economy (I'd bet they could get 30+ mpg highway) and have a "ZoomZoom" button on the center console to switch to a more aggressive boost/fuel/cam mapping.

And, while we are all pipe-dreaming about stuff that won't happen, they could keep the existing front-end geometry and sell us a replacement package containing a front subframe, engine, gearbox and PCM at wholesale prices as an apology for not telling us we'd be unpaid beta testers for the Renesis engine.

Here is a pic from Europe of the Vision shipped for Geneva.

This is taken @ Lake Como at the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Cernobbio.

God this is a beautiful looking thing (the first pic I have seen of it outside).

First pic is the highest definition I could get.
