Found this from GoAuto.com (June 2006), on Mazda's new model name patents...

"MAZDA is obviously leaving its options wide open with some new model names. In details submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the company has some interesting name registrations, with "active" status on the RX-1, RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, RX-5, RX-6 and RX-9.

The names MX-6, Mazda8, Mazda9 and Mazda REV have also been registered."

I know that Mazda8 (2006) is used in Hong Kong for the new Mazda MPV...

How long do these patents last? When were they actually registered? "Active" seems to indicate these are names that were previously registered - yet we have not seen the vehicles they apply to . . .

Psst - the rx-9 comes out in 07. Pass it on.

I dont think it means anything, they're just keeping their options open, a small price to pay for when they'll need it.

Can't give you anymore info..thought it was interesting though...

RX-1, RX-6, RX-9 and Mazda 9 have never been used...there was the RX-01 Concept 2 Door.

I am not "of-fey" with US Patent/Registration Laws, but, perhaps there are renewal fees to maintain Mazda's exclusivity...perhaps this is where the "active" status applies.
