The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) are regulations in the United States, first enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1975,[1] and intended to improve the average fuel economy of cars and light trucks (trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles) sold in the US in the wake of the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. Historically, it is the sales-weighted harmonic mean fuel economy, expressed in miles per US gallon (mpg), of a manufacturer's fleet of current model year passenger cars or light trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,500 pounds (3,856 kg) or less, manufactured for sale in the US. If the average fuel economy of a manufacturer's annual fleet of vehicle production falls below the defined standard, the manufacturer must pay a penalty, currently $5.50 USD per 0.1 mpg under the standard, multiplied by the manufacturer's total production for the U.S. domestic market. In addition, a Gas Guzzler Tax is levied on individual passenger car models (but not trucks, vans, minivans, or SUVs) that get less than 22.5 miles per US gallon (10.5 l/100 km)

The problem is as consumption goes down the price of gas will most likely go up so the cost would probably stay the same to fill your tank.

A mid ship mounted turbo 16x like an Elise would be something pretty Nice. Forget the Turbo, just the 16x itself. LETS SEE IT ALREADY!
Im glad to own an 8, unique 4 door freestyle, looks that kill, handles better than F22, Every Rotary powered vehicle has been unique in its own special way. I mean cmon, the Cosmo had a touch screen in the early 90's!!! Can you say BALL-AH.

It's CAFE. It means that for every 20mpg RX-8 sold, they just need to sell about 6.2 60mpg SkyActive Mazda2s. (using today's cars, obviously names would change, things would improve)
And that is hardly a difficult task imo. Especially considering the point that they have 13 years to make their sedans even more fuel efficient than SkyActive is making them. Entirely possible. The only manufacturers in trouble are the ones that don't have any economy brands. Even Bugatti is fine, because the Golf is an offset. Aston Martin is one of the few without anything to offset.

Mazda sells more of their non-rotary powered cars so it shouldn't be a problem for Mazda to keep the rotary alive

Doesn't need to. The hybrids and Focus and such will make up the difference so that the F150 doesn't need to hit that mark.

Well even Ferrari is fine. We have the multi-air fiats making up for them lol. Oh, and the evil diesels!
5L\100km is a realistic fuel consumption for that devilish fuel, especially during highway cruising.

Yup. CAFE isn't the evil monster people make it out to be. I heartily applaud the effort ... and I applaud any manufacturer that sees fit to produce fire breathing fun because their economy cars allow it, or R+D economy cars so they can have their fire breathing fun
