Just listening to the engineers talk, Im amazed at what they say is not only possible but will happen.

These are the words of a Mazda insider who is well placed to know everything that is going on within the company. The same words are also not an idle boast or company puff, they really are whats just around the corner and they have a major bearing on what fleet drivers will be choosing and using in the not-too-distant future.
The undoubted star of moment on the Mazda stand in Switzerland was the Shinari concept car [pictured directly below]. Its sleek lines and sporting appearance give every family car driver hope that their next car need not be a dulled down compromise.
Admittedly, the Shinari is just a concept and is emphatically not the next Mazda6. However, Mazda insiders happily confirm the front half of the Shinari shares more than a passing resemblance to the next Mazda6, while the rear hints clearly at the future direction of Mazda styling.
Sat next to the Shinari and in no way a poor relation was the Minagi concept. Calling this car a concept does seem a little far fetched as everyone at the Geneva show knew full well the Minagi is all but a production-ready car and will be called the CX-5 when it goes on sale early in 2012.

the CX-5’s 2.0-litre will present similar amounts of torque to a turbodiesel. Mazda isn’t talking exact figures just yet, but it does say we can expect this new engine to offer torque and economy on a par with the company’s current 2.2-litre turbodiesel. That indicates around 250lb.ft of shove, mid-50s economy and emissions of around 130g/km if the Mazda6’s 2.2 turbodiesel is anything to go by.

**** yeah! Especially since a diesel could idle all night and barely burn any fuel. 
Even though my old Mazda6 pissed me off really bad, I can't help but drool at the thought of a 6 with diesel engine for a 40-50MPG family car that is really fun to drive. Provided I get my requisite 3 pedals.

Are they suggesting that the CX-5 will be turbocharged? If not the torque should be MUCH less than we are saying here. Ithink it could make 10-15 more hp than the current 2.0 and perhaps 20 more lb/ft torque here in the US with the 13:1 compression we will get.

"A refreshed 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback quietly debuted this past week in Toronto... well, maybe not quietly, but we Americans don't exactly have our finger on the pulse of current events in Canada. In any case, the car is subtly restyled, but still maniacally happy. The much, much bigger news is that the 3 will have Mazda's new direct-injected "Sky-G" 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine when it goes on sale this fall.
Said engine will make 158 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm while running on North American-grade 87 octane. That's with a 13:1 compression ratio. (On higher octane European fuel, the engine will run at 14:1 compression and make 163 hp and 155 lb-ft.)
This engine will initially be offered with the new Sky-activ six-speed automatic transmission that's lighter and more efficient than the current five-speed automatic. We'll see Mazda's new 6-speed manual transmission, too, but availability will be delayed in North America (where manual-gearbox take rates are low compared to Europe). Still, says Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes, "there is every intention that there's a manual coming though."
Engineering Editor Jay Kavanagh has already sampled both the Sky-G and the 2.2-liter Sky-D diesel engine (headed our way in early 2013) in Euro-spec Mazda 6 prototypes, so check out his driving impressions after the jump."

While it is a cut above the econo boxes... it drives 3/4's of the consumers away from Mazda.
Look at Hyundai.
Excellent interior. They use that as a selling point.
It's how they get new customers.
Mazda can afford better quality interiors that weigh a little more.

While it is a cut above the econo boxes... it drives 3/4's of the consumers away from Mazda.
Look at Hyundai.
Excellent interior. They use that as a selling point.
It's how they get new customers.

Although, I do remember reading articles from Mazda stating they're aiming to be more of an upscale brand. Along with the cutting edge SKY engine line, unique styling (not the happy Pokeman look), upgrading the interior quality and comfort would certainly help Mazda reach that goal.

No, Paul...no way...non-turbo diesel engines are disappeared from car market (here)....no performances and without the advantages of massive turbocharging in modern diesel.
i don't know if 2.2 SKY-D will be available for cx-5 at launch. but i'm pretty sure that the new 1.6 Ford /PSA diesel (see new euro spec mazda5) will be into the lineup.
is the perfect engine for that car .(at least here in EU, with only FWD and MT)

You want to feel cheap you can try a Honda FIT.
hmm ... depends on what they do with the Sky-Activ I "might" consider a CX-5 or a new Mazda 3 ... damn I am losing mad money on this **** ...
