AU Mazda 3 Australia's Top Selling Car

http://news.drive.com.au/drive/motor...705-1h05h.html

At 2011's halfway sales mark, the Mazda3 is beating the Holden Commodore that has been Australia's best selling car for 15 years.

The Holden Commodore's dominance as Australia's best-selling car is under threat, with the Mazda3 small car outselling it for the first half of 2011.

Latest sales figures for June reveal Mazda sold 4212 Mazda3s last month (up by more than 14 per cent) against 3809 Commodores (down by almost 19 per cent) to give the Japanese small car a slender lead of 180 units - 21,212 versus 21,032.

Commodore's arch rival, the Ford Falcon, continued its slump, dropping by more than 30 per cent last month with just 1847 sales to give it an overall ranking of 11th on the new-car sales list. So far this year, sales of Ford's large car are down by more than 43 per cent compared with Commodore's 9 per cent fall.

There was better news for the blue oval's other homegrown model, the Territory. The recently updated Territory posted 1634 sales for its first full month in showrooms courtesy of the long-overdue introduction of diesel power, addressing criticism of the previous model's high fuel usage.

This represents a sales boost of almost 24 per cent on its June 2010 result, making Territory the best-selling SUV for the month.

As buyers seek more fuel-efficient vehicles in the face of rising petrol prices, small cars now represent seven out of Australia's 10 best-selling models, most of which enjoying a significant boost in sales.

These comprise the Holden Cruze sedan (3387), Volkswagen Golf (3275) and the Mazda2 light car (1907).

The Cruze sedan, now built in South Australia, will be joined by a hatch variant later this year to further bolster its market share. Besides outselling the Toyota Corolla last month, a double-pronged line-up is also tipped to help the Cruze outsell the Commodore when it comes on stream.

Despite relatively strong sales, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Toyota all saw a downturn in their top performers with the Corolla, formerly Australia's best-selling car, feeling the aftershock of Japan's earthquake with a decline of almost 49 per cent (2152) against May figures, or down by 17.5 per cent year-to-date.

Toyota also took a beating in other areas with the Nissan's Navara outselling HiLux 4x4 utility (2078 versus 1895), and the RAV4 compact SUV notching up just 715 sales versus 1534 this time last year — its lowest month in years.

At the other end of the scale, luxury SUVs enjoyed healthy gains, particularly with the introduction of all-new models such as BMW's mid-size X3 and Jeep's Grand Cherokee. BMW's bigger X5 took the segment title this month as Mercedes-Benz's M-Class suffered a 40 per cent decline in June.

Expensive niche sports cars grew by almost 15 per cent, led by BMW's new 6-Series convertible. Despite segment dominance, sales of Porsche's 911 are down while other models in the sports car maker's line-up gain in popularity.

While luxury SUV sales continue unabated, other SUV segments including compact, medium and large all took a hit last month.

While Holden's rivalling Captiva 7 steadied at 1248 sales last month, the smaller Captiva 5 boosted figures for the nameplate to add a further 629 units.

It's a General Motors made car here in my home city of Adelaide, state of South Australia, the state that once had the F1 GP for 11 years, the state with some of the worlds superb public roads throughout the Adelaide Hills (remember Classic Adelaide tarmac rally), just 15 minutes from City central.

The state that made your Pontiac GTO.

But you already knew that..

What is a Holden?, well it is just Hold'-en together
