two 2gen over 200,000 never a problem except for 1 trany and when i crash them and my 8 is on 27,000

 

If the car is naturally aspirated, it will last a long long time. Much longer than you will need it for. My 2nd gen is still running strong at 167k miles. The transimission went, replaced it, and it's back up and running again!

With that said, most of the problems i've read on here are associated with people who think they know what they are doing as opposed to actually knowing what they are doing in regards to modifying the renesis. By using the general rules of thumb maintenance procedures in the owners manual I see no reason why down the road there won't be plenty of long winded stock 8's with over 200k.

What's "thrashing on it when it's cold"?

Redlining it when it's cold is obviously thrasing on it.
I'm guessing anything over 6K RPM is definitely thrashing it.

Is 5K thrashing it? 4K? anything over 3K?

I don't take mine over 4K until the engine reads warm (I usually shift around 3K actually, but I'm kinda curious what's considered too high.

 

I've heard bad things about the renesis engine which hurts me being an 8 owner. One guy I talked to says that the apex seals on the renesis will not hold up for long. He gave me an estimate of around 35000 miles before the engine gives out. I forgot the reasoning behind it but thats what he told me. Also a friend of mine who works at a rotary shop told me that downshifting,rev matching/heel-toe is really bad for the engine. I used to downshift all the time in my car, but after hearing that, I've refused to downshift in my car to save the life of my engine. I don't really know too much about the renesis or rotary engines for that matter, but hearing this kind of stuff makes me think that my engine will not last long, though its still running strong with 25,000 miles.

I guess mine is a ticking time bomb with 67,700 miles on it.

You should talk to you friends about American Idol or something other than rotary's, they clearly do not know what they are talking about. Also driving the RX-8 like a Grandma is one of the worst things you can do.

rotary engines never die.. they just get harder to start, get a crummy idle and loose power.

my tech here had a 91 fc that had a good 185,000 miles on it before it started dying slowly.. that's not bad.

Had 2 RX-7s prior to this rx-8. Both were solid. Both were not turbo variants. My school friend had a Turbo II. Engine went kaboom right after the dash lit up like a christmas tree.
NA Rotaries are reliable pieces of engineering. Keep up with the maintenance like any good car guy should and it will last long. My current '06 Renesis have 0 problems.
