I'd love to get an LS, but too bad it costs an arm and a leg and a few internal organs.

This ES generation is a big improvement over the last one, which reaked of Camry XLE Plus. That said, it is the ultimate Buick for the boulevard and golf set. For that market it is perfect. It is very quick, but it is far from a fun canyon carver. It does have industry-leading Lexus quality, service, reliability and resale though.

How about fat and fun G35, new Maxima, reborn CTS, new swoopy Passat CLS, new Mazda6, big Honda Accord or new horribly ugly TL?

The IS250 handles very well. If I pretend to close my eyes, it's tough to tell the difference from the 8.

Not sure if this helps but I had a fully loaded 09' Camry as a rental for a week and I was actually very impressed with the ride and the power. Not comparable in any way to a sports car but as a family hauler I can only imagine the ES is just really nice. I drive in Mercedes' al the time and the fully loaded (granted it is brand new) Camry road just as nice on the highway as my bosses DD (S55). Everyone I had in the car commented on it. An LS is a whole other league.

My step-father-in-law recently picked up a GS350 AWD and loves it.

It's definitely a nice car with minor sporting pretensions.
