They'd better not call it RX-7 if it gets to production unless it comes with a rotary.

Speculation is that a production Kabura will most likely be called RX-7, a legendary name that the Japanese manufacturer very much wants to bring back.
Umm...wtf? Didn't Mazda guarantee that it wouldn't have a rotary? And from what I've seen, Mazda hasn't shown or mentioned any desire to bring the rx7 back.

i didnt even read the text, just watched the video, but whao i find that suprising my self.

it also says "Look for a full report on the Kabura ― plus a slew of other cool future machines from Japan ― in the cover story from the April 2006 issue of Road & Track." so this is a huge story, big enough to be their cover story. So i have a feeling this isnt just baseless speculation here, they must have heard it from some insider somewhere to make such a statement. i wouldnt loose any sleep over it though until mazda makes official announcements about it.

of course time will tell eventually, so lets be patient and wait.

hmm.. IMO they do need to bring back the 7 to compete with the Supra, and I hope that they do, but if they bring this back as the 7, as much as I love the rotary, i'll buy the supra.

Mazda has said that they would consider putting a rotary in the Kabura if a ton of people recommended it to them using the 'contact us' feature on their website.

I personally think that the RX-7 rumor isn't true. Mazda has stated that it will be a ~$20k vehicle. They're going to **** off a ton of RX-7 owners who seem to only remember the FD in the RX-7 lineup and think of it as a pure sports car with tons o' power. I think the looks of the Kabura have given rise to the RX-7 comparisons. I haven't read anywhere that the Kabura is likely to have a rotary at all and I don't think they would call it an RX-7 without a rotary (that is what the R stands for).

Saw it in Detroit - Kabura is based on MX-5 chassis / powertrain - so unlikely to be the new RX-7 - even if a rotary option is made avialable - ? 12B Renesis.

It is one sweet concept - hopefully along the lines of the RX-Evol. Would love to see pre-production car next year in Detroit followed by production in 2008.

Mazda appears to be looking to Gen-Y buyers looking for a entry level sports coupe under 20K.

Would definitely add this one to my stable for sure.

It can't be an RX-anything unless it has a rotary.

A nice turbo charged four with 230 hp is all it would really need. Reasonably fuel-efficient, light-weight should make it fairly fast. I would stretch it another 4 inches or so and go with a normal 2+2 configuration. Either that or scrap the back seats completely and gear the area for cargo. This would then compete with the Miata so perhaps not. Probably best to do a 2+2 with demi-doors like the 8 but smaller and keep it around 20k; affordable RWD pocket-rocket.

Would be great as a option - the Kabura R. Still not a RX-7.

Agree basically with powertrain - but still like the 3 plus 1 - remember the seat behing the driver is still a 'normal' small coupe back seat. The rear passenger bucket has extra room due to passenger front seat being pushed forward.

Make it Mazda. The Miata powertrain would be awesome. Talk about awesome aftermarket support and the 3+1 ideas is brilliant.

Am I the only one who think the 3+1 thing makes no sense? If you push the passenger's seat up too far, you're not going to be able to see out that side. I know these cars aren't designed to be ultra-practical for 4 people riding and you can push a conventional passenger seat too far forward, but this idea is bordering on a dangerous option to give people.

I don't know. I'm never going to say, "sweet, the dude in the back on my sports car is slightly more comfortable!" The RX-8 idea seems better for any "+" configuration.

I still doubt this car will be called a Kabura, it doesn't fit Mazda's recent nameplate system. Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, RX8, MX5, CX7. I think if anything it would be called an MX3.

It could.....but it defeats the purpose the of the 'R' in 'RX' which according to Mazda means "Rotary Sport". How can a vehicle be called a Rotary Sport 7 and not have a rotary motor?

MX-5 is a shortened RX-8 chasis. Kabura is on a shortened rx-8 chasis just not as short as the MX-5. This car was designed with a Rotary in front and changed later.

It wont come with a 2.0. itll come with a DISI 2.3 with the turbo as an option as the MX-3 and the possibility that the Renesis will be in it as an RX-3 is still quite alive.

^ WOW!!! That thing is ugly IMO. I'm glad they decided to change the design as the RX8 is a much sexier car.

Thanks for posting that Zoom.
