Thumbs up Kabura (and other) News Inside

From the ultra reliable Mark Rechtin at Automotive News

Kabura: The concept coupe derived from the rear-drive MX-5 platform is on the most-wanted list, but Mazda's U.S. arm needs Europe or Japan to sign on to provide enough volume to make the program viable. Plus, the MX-5 platform is so closely tied to the Miata, the Kabura may need new engineering.

I think its deal cutting time- MNAO should sign on to Mazda Europes wish for the CX-5

CX-5: A Mazda3-derived compact crossover may come in the fall of 2010 as a 2011 model, replacing the Tribute. To avoid its being cross-shopped with the CX-7, it would be a nonturbo four-cylinder only. Look at the Ford Kuga concept from the 2007 Frankfurt show for styling hints. The problem: The Escape/Tribute line is profitable for Ford, so the company would be unenthusiastic about Mazda eliminating the Tribute.
and Mazda Europe signs on to the Kabura. Every one gets what they want

Looks like a win-win...I never got or liked the Tribute, anyway.

Anybody notice the part about the MX-5 getting the 2.3 disi treatment? That one was bound to arrive sooner or later.

Agreed. I just hope that little roadster pushes the bar all that much higher for the next rotary powered variant - whatever that car may be.

I'm sorry I just can't get into the current Kabura styling. Looks way too squashed...and (dare I say it) the rear end reminds me of the Crossfire...

of course, the styling will be "domesticated". The RX-Evolv went through a lot of changes before becoming RX-8.

But yes, a rotary in the Kabura would make me consider giving up my S2 RX-7. maybe.

You kidding? With roughly the same horsepower and way less weight, a 2.3L turbo in the MX-5 would destroy the Solstice GXP, especially when driving dynamics come into play.

I'm just saying, they got a package for the Soltice... I didn't mean they're going to be faster than a Miata with the 2.3 DISI.

The MX-5 Engineers did say in 2005 that a DI 2.3 "would" be considered half way though the cars life cycle as a sales booster...great to see it may be a reality..still no 12A RENESIS?

I dunno.. after seeing the Kabura in that Youtube video.. I kinda dont like it.. it just seems to well blown up.. like a over inflated ballon yanno. Hopefully if it ever does make production (as a next gen rx-8 maybe hehe) they'll deflate it a bit.

Otherwise great news all in all for Mazda fans

I believe they are standards for what is acceptable when a car is impacted from the rear but only part of the car is impacted. Imagine a solid box running into the back of a car but the outside of the box only starts at the middle of the rear of your car.

This is a frontal offset.

I think its the recording that makes it look that way. It really looks distorted, shorter and taller.
