I think they look about as close to "exactly the same" as you're going to get without a lawsuit.

They're certainly similar, but so are a lot of other 5 door hatches. Who copied who, Mazda was at least inspired a little by the Impreza wagon when they first made the MP5.

Now that you put them right next to each other like that the Suby looks far better IMO. The lines flow much better and it doesn't look as squished and angular as the Mazda 3.

They liked the grill from the previous generation Kia Optima and so they tweaked it for the new WRX.

The Subaru has a nicer line front to rear. Almost a little rise in the rear compared to the Mazda. Both look pretty good though.

Some designs grow on you while others fade away. I need to see some on the road first.
I do not like the initial impression this photochop(?) gives.

Impreza has always had the feeling of a squat beefy bulldog to me (ugly but endearing), enhanced by the boxer engine with its resonant rumble, but that vision seems to be digressing to look more like a finessed car. It seems to be losing it's meaning.

- chris bangle sux - sorry, as irrelevant as it is, I had to slip that in there. The urge, the urge! Can't control it.

I can't even begin to tell you how much people hated the Bugeye Impreza when it was first unveiled. The way some people were acting you'd think Subaru had raped their mother. Nowthey go on and on about how all the new designs aren't as good as the bugeye.
If it makes you feel any better I've never liked anything Subaru has put out and still don't. Their designs are so out of proportion any awkward. It's actually embarrassing for me to look at one.

+1 to "Hate it now, Love it later." I passionately hated every WRX design since 02 before falling in love with it. Although i have to say im still holding fiercely to the 04-05 design.

That said, i've always like the look of the MP5, so why the hell not, right? With those side-by-side pictures though, its really hard NOT calling "Photochop BS" on that article. The curve of the pages could even have been faked. but why??

As for cars that look alike for no reason, thats always bugged the crap out of me, too:

vs

vs

hell, it even happened BEFORE the internet:

vs vs vs

(that last comparison is a Civic vs Corolla vs Maxima vs Accord)

By the way, that compairson pic isn't mine - it's from a post on Nabisco.

I just think it's funny that they're so similar that you actually have to hunt out things that are different. So far, I've found: different side rear window, slightly more curved transition into the Subaru's bumper, and a barely perceptible steeper rake to the Subaru's rear glass. Hell, the front bumpers even look the same from profile, as do the headlights and the mirrors!

lol its just that they look UNBELIEVABLY similar. i mean.... seriously. it seems like once every few years EVERY manufacturer gets on a certain design kick. why is that? why does every sedan get the SAME facelift at the SAME time?

I believe that is because they shared some of the same designers

There is always hope for the STI. The WRX if that is it looks well, bland. A WRX shouldn't be bland it should say F*3K Off I maybe a bit rough but I'm fast. This just says Blah.

This is a good looking hatchback:

And this is a chop of an 08 STI that shows they might be able to pull off the STI at least:

Well it was going to be but NAISOC is swarmed. If you look through the STI pic thread it's the black one.

If the Mercedes CLS was turned into a hatchback.

That is terrible.

Evo ftw!

Subaru just gave Mitsu a ton of business.

Looks cheap...like Kia cheap. Subaru has rarely ever made a decent looking car, maybe it's part of their charm.
