Hyundai's advertising... like or dislike?

I'm not talking about any one specific commercial, but Hyundai's advertising in general is somewhat confusing to the point that it annoys me.

They typically either claim to be equal or better than the larger luxury brands (bmw, mercedes, lexus etc) at an all to unrealistic price difference. I'd imagine that most people realize how large the difference is between a hyundai and any one of those brands, but hyundai still pushes that campaign plan.

The only reason it really strikes me as odd is the fact that pretty much every other brand will claim to be better than its (within class) competition.

Does anyone else get slightly annoyed? I know they know they aren't on par, but it still annoys me from time to time.

I agree. While Hyundai is making some awesome business directions, they will always be Hyundai, and nothing more.

I dislike their advertising for another reason. . .

I didn't fact check myself before posting, but I believe they claim to be the most fuel efficient car company in America.

This claim is made on EPA estimated MPG from '95 to '02 or '05, I forget which year. But that pretty much corresponds with the release of Santa Fe and Tuscon. And they don't many any pick-ups or full sized anythings...

It just bothers me that they make this claim, not because their cars are the best in class, but their company average isn't hurt by offering full-size trucks or SUVs. (Granted the SUV market is flooded).

The only way to try too get upmarket in your market is to improve your product noticeably and then claim to be "as good as" the higher priced competition you want to be associated with. Everyone loves a bargin. What's unusual about that? Of course it only works if you can produce a passable clone of the better car. Hyundai certainly has been able to do that and is getting better by leaps and bounds. Just like the Japaneese did decades ago.

Look at the crap lines car companies put out ...cases in point: BMW "The Ultimate Driving Machine"?...in some cases, maybe; Mercedes "Like no other" ...hopefully a promise; Mazda’s "Zoom-Zoom"...with a bit more HP I'll buy that sure; Chevrolet’s "Like a Rock" ...no comment; and Toyota’s "Oh What a Feeling"… that unintended acceleration gives me!

It's all BS pretty much like a 10 sec news sound bite or a pickup line in a bar...few believe it, but everyone keeps saying it.

I would have no problem buying a Sonata, Genesis sedan/coupe, and Tuscon if I'm in the market for those cars. There is no question Hyundai "gets it" now.

Didn't know "mazda" is all the "upscale" and "reputable" for us to look down on Hyundai, reminds me of VW folks making fun of Japanese cars when their car is "german".

Hyundai lineup is a bargain compared to cars in their classes.
They used to be cheap because the build quality is a joke, but now, it is a bargain.

I wont deny that they are good cars and especially for the money.

But I don't think you'll see a whole lot of people picking their cars over the BMW, mercedes, lexus etc to which they claim to be better than. And this isn't just due to status symbols/brand names.

Lower middle class is eating that **** up. I work in an area that is that exact demographic and it almost like the area is sponsored by Hyundai. I see a lot of new ones in that area.

That's not a bad thing though, they do look like nice cars.

Wow this thread had been dead for 2 weeks before I replied... I should stop posting early in the morning.

eh. i'm a fan of hyundai these days. i like the company and the cars they're putting out, what with the genesis, genesis coupe, and sonata. the genesis is a genuine alternative to mid-rage lexus and infiniti, and the genesis coupe, while not perfect, is great and in some ways in a class of its own. i like their advertising that i've seen, and imho they're quickly becoming the smart buy

Hyundai are much better cars then their previous iterations of their existing models, they continue to get better as they go along. Look at most of your luxury brands most of them had to evolve into that brand and become known as luxury, mostly BMW. BMW was known as an every day joe's car, but they had to work at making their cars better and more performance/nicer cars. Today if you look at them they are designing cars resting on their lurals and are not making cars like they use too. Hyundai will be a luxury car later down the road and are working at improving their cars, they are in the same spot as BMW was years ago.

So who cares if they compare themselves to other car brands; i.e. BMW, Mercedes, etc. At least they have high hopes for their brand. While every other brand is just sitting back and mainly designing from the past with little improvements but with huge cost increases.

The Genesis Coupe sales are toast once the new V-6 Mustang hits showrooms, but for now the 3.8 Genesis isn't bad at all. Test drove both and I thought the 2.0T was absolutely awful (not nearly enough power for the weight) but the 3.8 was pretty darn good. Nice pull, pretty smooth, decent handling.
