how to clean up a rotor

silly question, I have a rotor sitting in my garage that I want to clean up and make all shiny to just display.

Problem is I have no idea how, I tried once but gave up and now it's kinda rusty looking after sitting in my garage for like 5 months.

Go to shop that has a parts cleaner stand and/or media-blaster if it's really bad. Otherwise just a fine wire brush to get off the flash rust. A bath of muriatic acid overnight (outdoors due to fumes) will also help (or a few cans of Coke).

If you never intend to use it, media blast it. If you intend to use it again, don't. Once it is blasted clean, then send it off to either get plated or painted. It's that simple.

no it will never be used, I bought it specifically for display.

I'm guessing media blasting is like sand blasting or something similar to that?

Yes, except the media is typically plastic beads which are easier on the metal than ol' school sand.

Powdercoating after cleaning is a good way to go for display purposes.
