"better" implies i am comparing it with something. Im not. My wife doesnt want to drive a van anymore, and wants to return to a small car again, and it's a fantasticittle car. Incredibly light so it doesnt feel under powered, well balanced, turns easily, good steering feel, great transmission, loaded with features, both creature comfort and high end safety, and low price.

...
really?
You didn't even look at options and standard stuff when you were at Mazdausa.com? Or did the search ****'s boot you off the site before you could get past the price?
Because there is already a thread discussing the Mazda2 (with pictures of the MS2 even), and this thread is a waste, I'm going to post it all for you in 1 fell swoop. Have fun.

The base model (sport) dosent come with cruise control? terrible
If i was buying a car in this price range I would go with the Mitsubishi Lancer.... it starts at like 14.5 less than 1k more than this. Bigger car and I think looks a lot better.

god, that thing comes loaded! touring only adds better wheels (but same size), cruise control, steering wheel audio controls, different seat cloth, fog lights, and a spoiler?? wow, other than cruise control, i'd opt for the base no problem!
although, not "fat" to me, it is uglier than the fit for some reason. it's too rounded i feel like.

I agree about the green. Mazda usually does great with colors, but the green was a mistake imo.
But in other colors:
Even the green can be improved

It's a nice little car. There are pros and cons when compared to it's cousin the Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta has a touch more hp and a little better fuel mileage. The Mazda costs less and provides a little more features at the starting point for the hatch models. The Mazda is built in Japan while I believe the Ford is built in Mexico.
Mazda saved money by not using a new gearbox or auto trans. They actually managed to use a lot of existing technology and parts. That's interesting to consider vs the losses incurred through the Dollar/Yen ratio.
Here are some pics I got of the 2 at my local dealer.
Paul.

You know that gets the most press about the two but its actually not true when comparing the same Spec.
If you compare the 4cyl. and 5 speed for both the MPG is as follows
so its actually dead even if you buy the base 4 cyl and 5 speed manual, cloth seats etc. But the Ford price is at $15,795 before adding anything while the Mazda is at $14,730. If/when Mazda has the sky tranny ready mated to this engine it will match or better the Fords top mpg and still be priced less.
this is absolutely always skipped by the journo's because the "talk" is about how efficient the ford is so its better to compare the different spec'd cars instead of the same spec.
edit: forgot mention the SISS. When Mazda brings their idle stop the real world mpg will be even better because the systme is just more efficient than idle stop systems used by others.
