honest thoughts of my G20

i have a '93 infiniti G20 manual shift. I live in NJ, USA but this car is a Canadian model. Anyway...

I'm about to get a new car as i feel i want to drive around in a nice new car for once, instead of driving around in a 11 year old car.

I'm looking at a wide variety of cars from Mazda 3, Scion tC, RX8, Infiniti G35, Evo, 350Z, 325Ci, Z4, S2000 etc. (i want something trendy and there is no financial problems at all or any need for speed for that matter.)

If i get lower level cars such as Mazda3 or tC, i'll be happy because i'll have so much money to do else.

if i get higher level cars in my list i'll also be happy for what they have to offer.

what i am trying to say in this thread is, when i go drive in my '93 G20, it feels as solid, smooth, beautiful(IMO), as brand new car. it's suspension condition is perfect, steering wheel weight is nicely set, shifter feels very direct, the body is still solid, and very reliable, maintanance free!.

I feel that G20 is very well made car and still can compete with today's cars.

did anyone used to have or still has a G20 in this forum? if so, do you feel the same way about this car as i do or i haven't really experienced a life in a new car enough?

its time for a new ride. I am not a big fan of G20s but I think that you'll find solace in a number of the vehicles you named that will quickly make you forget about the G20s tepid performance. Any of those cars will suffice on your list--if you want something trendy stay away from the BMW 325 as its about to be redesigned.

I think you've got blinders on, I don't mean that as a put down... The G20 wasn't exactly a great car when it was new let alone a decade later. The 93 was basicly a tarted up altima wasn't it, not a bad car but not exactly class leading. On the other hand it seems you really like what Infiniti offered you the first time around so why not reward them by purchasing another one of their cars which are even better today then they were in the early 90s.

Also, if you're not really an enthusiast and don't really care about speed just cross the 350Z, Z4, and EVO off your list now, maybe even the RX-8. Beyond that none of us are really going to be much help, just go test drive and make your own choice.

I agree Ike, but I dont think the G20 was even up to the Altima class. I believe it was a Sentra in disguise.

don't worry everyone, I'm not trying to say this G20 is a better car than any of yours. I'm not starting a troll with my "93 G20 against the 2004 RX8 or any other new cars out there.

I'm just appreciating this car and i'm very satisfied with this car even though it's 11 years old. since this is a "general Automotive" section I thought i'd share a thought here about a car.

don't tell me what not to get or what to get based on who you 'think' i am. i've owned a severl sport bikes so far and i'm a speed freak on those things. i.e. '01 zx6r, '01 cbr600, '02 cbr600, '03 R6, '01 996, '01 748. this is part of reason that i didn't get any sports cars since i can feel all the speed i want on my bikes. car is there to commute tha'ts all.

don't get offended people... too sensitive...

I think.......

RX-8: If you like the style, and want to have a hi-revving rotary engine car. Fun to drive,

G35 sedan: If you like power, practicality, and don't want to give up the Infiniti reliability & service.

G35 Coupe: If you are willing to sacrifice practicality of the sedan for style.

BMW 3 series: Prestige, performance, balance, practicality, proven design. More expensive than others, but total cost of ownership might not be too bad.

Subaru Legacy: AWD, Turbo STi engine, nice styling, easy to mod, high potential. Reliability? Resale?

Scion Tc: Low cost, decent performance, killer roof, awesome reclining backseats, cheap mods w/ factory warranty. Looks young and might be the next Civix.

Good luck with your choice.

I think you're the only one that took things wrong, I wasn't offended and was offering up my honest opinion which is what you asked for, and so did others. Then you came back with a thread about how we're too sensitive... You said you had no need for speed so I gave you advice on cars you might want to elimate because they are built for speed and aren't all that commuter friendly. So then of course you come back and get defensive and get upset about people telling you what to get on who they "think" you are... Go sell crazy elsewhere, we're all full here. You need something to commute with and that's it, get a freaking Camry and bugger off, or take your own advice and don't get all "sensitive" when people take time to try and help you out :D

The G20 was based off of the JDM Nissan Primera, with the stick it was a capable car but still mediocre. I don't know why they brought it back after that brief hiatus. I don't think I ever remember reading a positive article about the car. Like I earlier said tho, you'll be very happy if you leave it behind--in fact test driving those other cars will probably make you appreciate the G20 less.

try to look at what your sig says and tell me things. you are a 'king troll' as you represented yourself as. i've also asked if anyone was ex-owner of this car. unless you have this car you won't be able to answer my question. I know it didn't win any "car of the year" at it's time but i still think it's a nice car to commute. but i do feel it's a decade old so the style has to change for me.

again, try not to tell me what car i should drive, especially you troll boy, because i you are driving a car that i actually won't even put in my shopping list. this obiously tells me that you and i have a quite different taste in cars. "go buy a camry"? please... if i was interested in camry i woulnd't be on this forum spending hours reading about the 8.

for your note, i've test driven s2k, rx8, g35c already and i still raised this issue. i still think G20 is a great car no matter what car it was based off of.

yeah i've already eliminated 3 series off my list as it will be replaced by 2005 fall with brand new design.

there are too many cars that offer almost the same but at the same time have their unique capabilities. plus i'm pretty damn picky when buying things so it would take a while to pick the winner for me

Sir:

You are the only person to whom I will suggest buying an automatic RX-8. You don't need the extra 2500 rpm or 40-50 hp it brings with it. But, you'll get all the trendiness and styling, and all the handling and comfort, and the thousands you'll save can be applied to more luxury, or simply socked away to pay for gas.

Er, wait, maybe you should get a manual Mazda 3s--just as trendy, nearly as fun to drive, and gets 32 mpg on the open road. And you won't crack 20k!

thanks for your advice Policy, but I'm a stick driver. can not drive automatic as i feel so num in any cars.

wait, are you serious that 3 is as fun to drive as 8?

again, money is not an issue for me as long as it doens't go over $80k. i personally think spending more than $80k on a car is not a smart decision, especially on crappy NY and NJ roads.

No, I said "nearly" as fun to drive, and I was referring to the stick 3s vs. the auto 8. Frankly, I don't think the auto 8 is worth bothering with, but I know that ruffles some feathers around here, so . . . anyway, if money isn't an issue (and therefore, gas isn't an issue) I'd still suggest the auto 8, and DEFINITELY the auto 8 over the auto 3.

i believe AT sports cars are waste of metal and engineering. no offense to AT drivers here but i really feel pain when i see rx8 with AT. there is actually an 8 parked in front of my building everyday and i admired it so much. but when i saw that auto tranny inside, i almost literally tripped. i was like "wtf!!!???"

even if they come out with sequential tranny in 8, i would choose MT all the way. i drove m3 smg and it wasn't all that fun without the clutch pedal. but this has been battled over at m3forum countless times so i don't want to start a MT vs. Sequential Trans. thread here.

WAIT! I had an 02 G20, loaded to the giils as my work car. Heated seats, everything. And with what few mods it had this was a great car. It's not going to beat very much in a race but as far as a really great running car, I've owned several different cars and this was the best, as far as just a great running car.

I have a 2000 G20T 5-speed manual. It's a very reliable car with no major rattling and it glides over bumps with the greatest of ease. I like the champagne color, or whatever they want to call it. It also has a forum. I got it usedvia autobytel.com at below-dealer-cost, a very nice price indeed, plus they gave me $200 to come get it from Jacksonville. Very nice. It's a very nice around-town very tame automobile that is very safe for its size class, and rather comfortable, with nice leather seats. Has 4 doors - great for when I have more than 1 passenger.

There, that's all I can come up with, as far as "likes".

I dislike driving it just about completely. No power. Suspension absorbs bumps and along with that, all the road feel completely. I am sitting too high and erect. Shifting is long-throw and feels like I'm shifting a pickup truck. With no power anyway, I wish it was an automatic.

My plans are to dump it whenever the RX-7 replacement comes out. I just hope I can put up with it that long. My wife really drives it more. If she cries much about it before then, I don't know what I'll do - maybe another used whatever in the interim.

For a car that looks fast, it's a huge disappointment. I'm really hating it lately.

I like my 93 MX-6 a whole heck of a lot more. Big time.

So, well, you asked. Hope you don't mind the negativity, I'm just trying to be honest. I own one too, just much newer.

If you truly feel your 93 G20 can compete with today's new cars, good. Word of caution though, don't test-drive any of those cars you listed! The only let-down about what you thought before the test-drive will be on your ride home.

Red face

There's something odd about the way you write......yet you can spend $80K on a car?
Sorry, it must be the Don Julio. :o
