A good thing or bad?

GM discount

I think it's good but they still have to fix their company in other ways other than cutting prices.

A good thing for consumers, but it still looks desperate. Maybe they're trying to get rid of all their crappy designs, so that the (hopefully) new and exciting designs will soon be flowing onto the dealer lots? Yes, they have a lot of work to do.

Yeah, honestly I think their new modles (most recent) are pretty dang good and they finally might be living up to their potential.

They have 76 models?? Geez...

As for the discounts... If the few GM cars I've recently seen (solstice) and driven (Impala) are representative of the rest of their line right now, I don't think it's a bad thing at all. The low prices will get people to the showrooms, and the surprising jump in fit-and-finish and overall build quality in their newest vehicles should have people driving them home (the cars, not the showrooms).

They dropped the MSRP, so what. Most people only pay invoice.

i dont think they need to kill FWD cars, transam kid. RWD cars are for car enthusiasts, they are terrible in the winter and on slippery surfaces. FWD cars are just more practical in nature for the everyday daily drivers. Theres enough RWD cars for car enthuiasts.

but cars such as the monte carlo, which is a sports car...with a small block V8 or a supercharged V6...does that not deserve RWD????

I think they're cutting prices to show people that there cars can be just as reliable as the Japanese cars. They're convinced that once you buy the car, you'll see that they have improved and will continue to buy their cars. And their cars HAVE improved, but I'm not sure I would put them at Japanese quality yet.

RWD cars are for car enthusiasts
Yeah, I guess there is a place for FWD...but with sporty cars...it should come RWD or AWD, NOT FWD.

but I'm not sure I would put them at Japanese quality yet.
Yeah, not yet...but much better that's for sure.

By the Way they are continuing the camaro. The 2006 was cancelled due to the cut in models but they have a new version coming out. It dabued at the detroit auto show as a 2009. I think it's sick. Might even be the first american car I'd by. but at 20G base it will be everywhere so I'd buy the highest model and not drive it maybe. As for the price cuts, If you read it carefully means they'll raise the prices. They're just playing with words to attract customers, because last year people were only paying employee prices which were much less. This year they're only cutting MSRP by 1 to 2.5Gs depending. Not to mention taking away the extra incentives. Cutting models is the best idea since their sister companies have almost identical cars, just slightly different bodies.

GM is going to have to make cars that people want to drive again before they will come out of their slump. OK, the Corvette is amazing, but most of their fleet feels like they were made by a boat company. They all float badly. The dash layout of most of their cars has always been very nearly square. It's like they keep putting newer more boring bodies on chasis that are purposefully designed to be rental cars.

First they killed off their main pony car in the Camaro, then they tried to re-invent the GTO complete with the 4000 pound heft of a 60's Musclecar, hidious mustard colored gauges in the dash, and a shifter that had very nearly a foot of travel...just like they did 40 years ago. Oh yeah, the hopped up their perfectly sane trucks with God awful plastic body cladding that looks like something they morphed up from the Aztec. Wasn't that one pretty...

Seriously, they need to fire their designers and start all over.

In most cases the price cuts aren't significant, especially not if you look at invoice prices, which didn't get cut as much. My site (see sig) has all the new prices. The only 2006 prices I'm still waiting for: FX and RX-8. Come on already!

FWD generally isn't good, but the GP GXP is fun to drive, if not necessarily for the right reasons. It's very flawed, but it's unique, and has character that so few cars today have. Much more fun than the Maxima, for example.

The related Impala SS, OTOH, is just plain boring.
