Dude,
I'm 28. I make decent money, but I have student loan payments, a mortgage payment, and two kids in daycare. My Chevy is paid off, which is good because I can't afford a car payment. I even had to cancel my gym membership because I can't really afford the $50 a month for it.

I'll be one of those boring 50 year olds driving a Vette someday, because as much as I would love one I really can't afford it now. :D

I'm happy for you. Enjoy it. I'm just thinking that I personally would be quite happy with a 'mere' 400 horsepower and a 6 speed manual ... since right now I'm stuck with 180 horsepower and a 4 speed auto.

Some people call it the "mid life crisis car". I'm starting to realize that for many people it's a "I finally have money car".

You gotta love the Z06... At ~$70K that bad boy can pretty much run with anything on the road, even the exotic supercars. What kills me is that it's 500hp and naturally aspirated. If you get some FI on it, it's unbeatable, especially for the price...

Exactly what I was thinking Apophis, could you imagine the numbers that thing would put down with some twin turbos bolted on?

Do your thing Pilot, you think like I do, don't let the sissies get to ya!

corvettes are the fastest car for their price...obviously....and they are N/A. supercharge em like ligenfelter and its like an ICBM on wheels. simply unbeatable.

just remember what you are spending 70k on: a car built purely for speed and to turn heads. are you going to use it for that? my rx-8 does enough head turning and I don't go racing everywhere so spending that much money is a waste.

no one can tell you what you need, you need to see that for yourself. if you have the funds and it doesn't matter at all about the price than go for it. however, picture your situation after buying the car and ask yourself if that is what you need (not want).

hope you make the right decision for yourself,

nzarnow

I'm not sure these new Z06's will be able to be "fixed up" like previous versions though. The compression ratio is 13:1 on the 500 hp engine. Not to mention they said when they got to 7.0 liters there is no more room to bore & stroke this engine. In the most recent reports the head of GM research said don't count on more hp like they did when they had the 385-405 hp transition on the previous model). He stated there is pretty much nothing left to be done. Short of dropping in lower compression rods & pistons & sleeving this engine there might not be a way to add FI to this car.

I'm not angry at you or anything. I'm sorry if I upset you.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the car now, if you can afford it. I just was a little (not a lot, just a little) offended that you poked a little fun at the 50 year old Corvette owners.

What you do or do not do with your 401k is your business. Personally, I have two reasons to contribute as much as I can afford. First, if I die my wife still will have to retire someday. If we both die, the money will go to our kids - who will need it to get through college. Second, if I do live long enough to retire I want to retire in style.

No the compression ratio is not 13:1, it is 11:1. I doubt there is any production street engine running 13:1.

I understand the appeal of something that goes faster. But I would only buy something I was going to use as a commuter car. I could see myself commuting (in dry weather) in a Corvette, a 911, an M5, an XLR-V, or an E55 if I had the money.

But once we get to the Viper, the C6 Z06, the Ford GT, the F430, the 911 turbo... I would think handling that much power in daily traffic would get tedious, maybe even dangerous after a while.
Well the 911 Turbo was actually criticized for being TOO civil--hence the creation of the harder edge 911 GT2 and GT3. Viper is definately not a commuter car, the 430 and GT would cause so much commotion that you couldn't do basic stuff like get gas. The Z06 is a nice compromise between 911 FAST/civility and Viper pureness.

Well said, I agree with your stance on the Vette along side these other cars. Chevy designed it so that it COULD be a daily driver if need be. I think we all know cars like the Viper would not be a good choice for something like that.

It's still hot enough to get you looks and speed is certainly not an issue.

good lord..i'm not sure i'd even want to turbo it.. i think the only thing i might do is maybe an ecu chip and an exhaust... you are right though..it is already pretty much tuned to the max...you'd have to spend some more crazy cash to strap on some turbos... yeah i would like to see what lingenfelter does though. i'm under the impression that a 505 n/a horsepower car with around 475lb tq is plenty enough though..most cars can't get that unless they're boosted severely! N/A is always best..power anywhere you put the gas down :D

as for handling i'm sure it is better than the standard C6...one thing is it's 3 inches wider with the body work and that promotes big-time down force on this car....they say there is no need for a spoiler..(but of course it's optional for those that must have)

can't wait to see it in person!

A sidenote--for 2006 the Corvette is getting a 6speed paddle shifted auto. I'm sure that the Z06 will continue with manuel only (as it should).

Whoops, sorry. I was thinking the new M5 engine, it's 12:1. The 911's & M3's are running over 11:1 already, so it is close.

GM should make flame-proof shorts an option to make it easier to brave "the train" on the way out (where everybody gets their last smack in because your new car isn't an 8). hehe

We'll never win what we're asking, though. They want silly money.
