Full 2008 Mazda 2 Specs - This car weighs 2,100lb!!!
I mean damn, that is impressive, 2,100lbs? While most of us wouldn't really consider this car as our primary driver, it gives me hope that Mazda could create a 2,500lb Kabura car pretty easily.
for the record, here are its competitors weights:
Yaris - 2,290lb
Fit - 2,432lb

My first car out of university was a 2000 pound Suzuki Swift GT. Only 100hp (when stock), no power steering, that thing was a blast. Prior to that, I had a '76 Grand Prix with a 455...ask me which was more fun?
'till this day, light always feels right.

It's cool that it weighs less than the Yaris and Fit and all, but it isn't necessarily a 100% good thing. What if it's much less safe or just all around lower quality materials? Just providing a different perspective. Does it really matter if a dinky car like this is 200lbs less if it affects safety? It's not going to be a fun time car anyway.

Was that an Isuzu Rode (Honda Passport)? Looks like it from the side and headrests. It was not a stellar vehicle in any manner.
It is nice to see Mazda has bucked the ballooning car weight trend. I hope the materials and quality are good. Lately Mazda has been pretty good with those items.
The 2 is certainly better looking than the Fit, Versa and Yaris. The Fit and 2 will duke it out for most fun to drive subcompact. I don't know why people buy the Yaris. Its the Echo in a better looking body.

I think we are missing the bigger picture guys, we have beeng introduce to mazda's new desing identity, theres cues of the "Flow" that has beeng shown in recent consept's, the new front end and the new grill, look for all this fetures in the new mazda6
I think if the mazda6 follows this desing direction we are headed in a good direction, this car looks really good

In comparison the Smart weighing only 1600 lbs is far safer:
Here's a Smart hitting a wall at double the speed (4 times the crash-energy): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x87g7_Smart-Car-Crash

as used in the MX-5.
But yes the Mazda 2 is a very light Mazda, the fully loaded 2006 Mazda 2 here have side curtain air bags also.

I wouldn't rate the Smart's safety by how it looks after a crash. That footage was from Fifth Gear a couple season ago. The problem with the Smart is although it is basically designed as a roll cage, is pretty much has no crumple zones so all the force is transmitted to the driver.
Back to the 2, it looks like it could become an autox favourite in no time!

A human body can bear extreme accelerations: For example, racing cars don't really have crumple zones either and drivers still survive horrific accidents simply because none of there body parts hits anything when smashing into a wall. So a car without crumple zones is not necessarily unsafe as long as the driver wears a seatbelt and the car is fitted with proper airbags.
