The V6 is probably from Ford (Ford USA, as most Ford V engines). The small I4 diesels are from a joint venture with the PSA group (Peugeot). The Lion diesel V6 (2.7l) is mainly Ford though.
It's not sad, it's a sound way to do business. Mazda can keep its specific core values while taking advantage of the Ford part bin and knowledge base.
The proof of the sanity and the non intrusion of this politic, is the fact that the RX8 and next MX5/Miata are 100% Mazda DNA.

Isn't the RX-8 horn from Ford? I would like to thank Ford for that nice loud horn that gets the attention of other drivers and pedestrians alike, not at all like one of those wimpy import sounding horns. :p

So I guess chrysler owns mitsubishi then because they share parts and platforms.
The dodge stratus is a mitsubishi eclipse.. the chrysler sebring was at one time too.. and it even had the mitsu engine in it.
Ford doesnt own mazda. They have vocal say in their business owning 33%. They're business partners and it's good for business.
It helped keep mazda alive when they tried to take on toyota and honda in japan (and nearly killed their company doing so).
