Ford getting rid of fuel filer caps

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a.../1014/BUSINESS

the twist on/off kind in favor of the metal flap type they used on the GT. this is to eliminate the problem o f not screwing the filler cap on at all or correctly after fueling so it should eliminate false evap CELs

Here's how it works: When the nozzle of a conventional gas pump is put into the fuel filler point, it pushes on two tabs that open a spring-loaded metal flap. That allows the pump to sit in the tube that delivers gas to the tank, just as a pump does after the cap is unscrewed. After the nozzle is removed, the spring-loaded door seals the pathway shut.

The innovation addresses issues for at least two key target groups. It could be a boon for aging drivers with arthritis and women who don't want to muck up their nails by unscrewing caps.

Ford research, though, found that the capless system was universally liked by drivers -- young and old, men and women, said Mike Cowley, Ford's manager of North America fuel systems.
Aside from the MKS in 2008, Ford would not say when the capless system would be available in other vehicles, but it will be installed across the entire lineup.

Ford spokesman Nick Twork said it's a "go-fast" project.

"As fast as we can get it out there," he said.

Ok, I've seen this technology on go-carts. What the hell took so long?

Doesn't this make it easier for anyone with a similar tube to access your fuel tank and syphon out the gas or - worse - drop some sugar in there as a prank?

It doesn't really make it any easier I don't think. It'll still have the fuel door on it -- this just replaces the gas cap itself.

It also sounds like even if they DO get inside the fuel door, it might actually be more difficult for the folks to actually access the gas tank than it used to be. The tabs they're talking about lead me to believe that it might actually be fairly difficult for someone to work their fingers down to open the door that seals off the tank.

I might be thinking of this all completely incorrectly, but I'm envisioning a hole where you put the pump in, and down in that hole are these tabs that open the path for fuel.

My guess is that contraption with the hole in it will still probably be attached to something like a cap that can come off if need be. Normally, you won't have to pull the cap off if you're filling at a gas station, but what if you need to pour gas in from a cup that you found on the side of the road to hold the gas you siphon off some dead guy's ride during the next Apocalypse.

This is a good idea on Ford's part! I've had my CEL come on on at least 3 occasions because the gas cap didn't seal properly (I always hear clicks meaning it should but it doesn't always)! Looking at what the dealership may charge to turn off these CELs (last time I went they didn't immediately put it as a warrantee item) I don't want to potentially pay the $90+ estimate for them to say my gas cap was loose or didn't seal properly!
