Is E85 Dead Now?
Taken from Slashdot: http://yro.slashdot.org/story/12/01/...s-e85-dead-now
"With a stoichiometric ratio far lower than that of gasoline (much lower than the price difference), buying the E85 ethanol fuel blend instead of gasoline was already hard to justify. Unless you raced your car on a track where E85 provided a great alternative to race fuel, it really didn't make financial sense. And there are other reasons not to buy E85, too. Like the impact corn-based ethanol is having on food prices or the questionable emissions results (PDF). So, now that the ethanol subsidies provided by the U.S. federal government are scheduled to end this summer, it's going to be even harder to justify E85 (at least in the U.S.). This change will basically make a gallon of E85 cost the same or slightly more than gasoline. With so many things working against it, are the days numbered for readily available E85 at your local gas station? And should it have ever even been made available to begin with? How much did all that government-backed R&D and tax credits cost us for something that was pretty clearly questionable to begin with?"

Some rx7 guys love this e85 stuff cuz it allows them to tune their car on the edge.
But what they dont reliazed is that our gasoline can do the same thing --- as long as they can up the standard. Not lowering it like couple years ago
Anyway, hope this ethanol bullshit die asap. That bitch lisa at epa can take the lobbyist money and go to jail together

Here in Utah it's all but phased out. There are two stations left within 200 miles of me that sell it.
The subie/evo guys that use it are finding out its more like E 60 not 85, pretty bad stuff.
Seems to me that it's going out of style. Not soon enough IMO.
What cool is around here is there is anew set of gas stations that are selling 110 leaded race gas at the pump, pretty cool, but very pricey.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and should probably stop talking. E85 offers the effective octane of LEADED race gas along with chemical cooling properties that make it arguably better than race gas at 1/5th the cost. Traditional unleaded gasoline even 100-105 octane race gas doesn't hold a candle to the timing and boost you can run with E85 and costs $9 a gallon.

The guys that love E85 are always running forced induction and only care about obtaining huge power numbers from undersized engines. They could care less about gas mileage or the negatives of E85 since bragging about some number on paper is far more important to them than practicality or actual ***** size.

...Yes, it absolutely can be compared to race gas, as almost all Evo's racing have swapped over entirely to E85 or E98 over race gas.

The one subject that always brings out the idiots and retards
It's a great performance fuel for rotary engines, the consumption rate relative to fuel tank size can be an issue as can availability
There are situations where aluminum contact can be an issue, but it is not hydrochloric acid that will eat a hole in you intake manifold that ignorant people like to falsely believe. There are numerous threads in the Alternate Fuel forum on RX7Club if the subject interests you.

For once I absolutely agree with TeamRX8, this topic apparently brings out the idiots and retards in droves.

sure when I say gas has as high rating as E-85 is a bit of exaggerate. cuz it's not. but there are ways to raise the octane rating without using Ethanol Garbage.
E85 is a freaking joke, Evo guys love it cuz they don't give a **** about the garbage MPG and it allows them to go higher than "standard gasoline" tune. other than that ...
Race gas cost a lot cuz, well, it's "RACE" gas. sure I mean it has more stuff so they should sell it at a higher price BUT u also forgot that everything with the word "Race/Racing" on it cost significantly more.
Corn Ethanol lost the race b4 it even start. Now I can only hope that they will get rid of "E10" ASAP.

ocatne is only one component of the fuel that needs to be looked at when you are running a FI rotory engine. There are other qualities of the fuel that also need to be considered. Heck it has gotten to the point that most people do not even buy race gas at the track anymore as you still dont know what you are getting.
E 85 is no different. If you buy it at a station who knows what content you actually get. PITA to test it everytime.
The quality of true e 85 makes it a great fuel for the rotary except for the lubrication issues that may be a factor if you DD with it? On the track that shouldnt be an issue.
I now mix my own gas when I track. At least then I have a better idea of what is in the tank.
Guys that want E85 will continue to order it. if they are seriously tuned for E 85 they are probably not buying it at the pump anyway.

The funniest thing about a thread like this is people comment without sufficient knowledge and data. My chemistry is way too limited for me to comment about the pros and cons. I do have opinions and some are based on statements I've seen from people on this site that have proven their knowledge on the topic of fuels, their effects on various engine and car types, as well as effects on the air we breathe.
Mr Engman knows his share about fuels and on this forum I've enjoyed some of the postings by DocBeech and Mazdamaniac knows a lot about many topics.
My personal feelings about alcohol being added by Government mandate is: I'm not happy with my decrease in fuel economy as prices increase. Of course I'm talking about 10% ethanol. Much beyond that I'll sit back and enjoy the show.
Paul.
