its not a SUV in the traditional sense, and its mileage will be a hell of alot better than an explorer or tahoe.

This is good that they found the extra seats really usable, with the CX-9 Mazda has finished filling out its product slate. Given the response on CX-7's these should sell well also.

Mazda really just needs to get the Mazda6 updated and it can hold its own in any product segement in the market.

see the car above and the cx-9 and the 2008 mazda 6 (and ford edge etc) are all built on the next generation version of the platform that the current mazda 6 is on.


even knowing that for some reason i am suprised at how close the window lines are between the 2 vehicles. why that aspect caught my attention i dont know...

its an interesting design tho. dropping the upper edge of the window line, as compared to the roof line, as you go front to rear gives the illusion of the vehicle being smaller than it really is. i bet that causes a "revalation" moment when a person looks inside for the first time "wow look at the space inside".

You're right Brillo, after the cx-9 and the new 6 for their segments, it would be like heading into the second generation of mazda design... and will probably hold their own. Kinda like Nissan a few years back.

it will probably be november at the LA autoshow. i think it will go on sale mid to late summer next year as a2008 model.

It's hard to believe they fit a usable 3rd row into the CX9. I've driven the Edge and the MKX which are the same platform and they are only 5 passenger vehicles. I've sat in the back of them and can't see where the CX9 fits another useful row. If is has a 2nd and 3rd row like the Jeep Commander then forget comfort.

6 inches is alot of difference in length . plenty of space to add a row and make it worth it

6 inches is a big difference.......I don't know about it being plenty or not, but certainly helps. I can't wait to see one in person to check it out. Having driven the Edge and MKX I know all three of these SUV's are going to be very popular. That new platform and engine package really makes for a competitive vehicle. I think all three designs are every bit as nice as far more expensive offerings and should sell like crazy.

At least that is the expectation we have here at Ford.

The looks is gonna win it for the CX-9. I've had people telling me how the CX-7 looks like a porsche cayanne. I cant wait to see the new Mazda6, its gonna be big for Mazda in the next few years, hope they can grab more market shares with these exciting new cars.

i mainly would like to see the amount of room left when all 3 rows of seating are being used. A previous article stated how most 3 row suv's lack storage behind the third row when its upright (which i find quite true, especially in american based 3 row suvs) and that the design of the cx-9 to this into effect and engineered more room behind the rear door.

Nice review. Mazda definitely is building some great cars at the moment.

Hope the redesigned Mazda 6 is more successful sales wise than the current one. It was a critical darling but not the homerun they wanted.

The Mazda Tribute is pretty sad....maybe they'll replace it with an Edge model.

the review says 19inches of floor space with 17 cubic feet. thats , at least, much floor space as the 2 row Edge that i saw at the autoshow and more than say the Subie Tribecca which has only 8.3 cubes behind the 3rd row.

hmm i think the edge actually has more floor space- i remember thinking it was quite alot more than i was seeing in other vehicles. its probably over 20 inches deep

I still prefer the domestic market MPV much better than the CX-9 though. Too bad the US market aren't too keen on minivans.

Am I the only one who noticed the article's mentioning of a 60-degree double-overhead cam 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at a healthy 263 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 249 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm? I wonder which coupes/sedans Mazda will be putting that into next.

That is the new Ford Duratech 35 which has been discussed on other threads. That engine is going to be optional in the Fusion/Milan/Mazda6....standard in the MKZ/Edge/MKX/CX-9. It's a really nice engine and responds very well to FI from what I heard from engineering

I'd like to see an SUV with a 20B, but I know it's never going to happen. They could call it the Mazda Guzzler.

It would be nice if Mazda offered a 20b period. Why doesn't Mazdaspeed sell 20b engines for their racing community? If they do, they don't advertise that very well on the website. In the Ford Racing site you can buy several race engines....including the 5.0L 'Cammer' for $15K.

I'm sure there are other vendors selling 20b engines.....but Mazda should do this in-house IMO.

The CX-7 was designed specifically for the NA Market....after 2 months MA announced the CX-7 in RHD (ha) December 2006 release...

It's soon to be released in Japan and Europe...
