CX-5 Finally surfaces?

Automotive News had the CX-5 listed for upcoming Mazda vehicles awhile back. They were of the belief that the Tribute would get the CX-5 moniker but that didnt happen.

Now AutoExpress
has an article with a photo(chop i believe- "artisits conception") of what could be the CX-5 based on the Hakaze-
As our exclusive picture shows, the crossover model will be inspired by the Hakaze – the design study which made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month – and take aim at Land Rover’s Freelander. It com- bines the fun of the brand’s MX-5 roadster with the practicality of the CX-7 SUV, which will be coming to UK showrooms in September.

The production version will also boast removable roof panels to give occupants a genuine wind-in-the-hair experience

And while the distinctive Mazda radiator grille and swept-back headlamps have a familiar look, there are plenty of new features to surprise buyers. Key styling cues taken from the Hakaze include a split-opening tailgate and four-seater cabin.

The production version will also boast removable roof panels to give occupants a genuine wind-in-the-hair experience. However, the bubble can*opy of the Hakaze and its pair of long doors are not scheduled to appear on the roadgoing variant.

check the link for the rest of the story. Here is the pic

Mazda, please change the front end if you're going in this direction.

I don't like where Mazda's design direction is going. Looks eerily similar to the "flow" stuff we've been seeing even if it's only an artist conception.

Its very Murano-esque with the upswept rear pillar. Its better than any rebadged Ford product though.

and the door. if your going to make a crossover or suv, dont make suicide doors (or a 2 door). I think it isnt functional for what its worth. But there good on the 8...cuz its not an suv or crossover!

That looks like a bad CG render mixed with a photoshopped CX-7. I wouldn't worry too much that it's ugly at this point.

Here's a thought, how about offering it with a manual or DSG transmission? I'd consider an AWD crossover type vehicle if handled really well, had decent power, AND let ME choose what gear I'm in.

That was weird, MadRonin - I just did a GIS for "Yojimbo" (Ninja Turtles character) and your avatar was the second image. Then I clicked back here and saw that you had posted right after me. Wacky!

I actually like the headlights. The grill is hideous, though.

Looks good, seems like mazda really did get rid of the two level grilles. I remember when autoblog posted about the upcoming next gen mazda3, one of the styling cue is that they'll get ride of the top grille. It looks good, just like the RX-8. And when other manufactuers are making the top part larger (i.e Infinti imo), mazda takes it out. Maybe this is the way they're going to style mazda cars, so they'll be easily identified as mazdas (mentioned in their long term plan)

Much better looking than Hakaze in my humble opinion.

2 SUVish vehicles is plenty, a 3rd is a waste. The 2 they have sell fairly well. Money would be better spent on development of current platforms. This one will have mediocre sales at the very best. Cutting the Tribute segment out completely would be a good thing. The CX-7 is small enough and cheap enough to attract buyers from this market (not all of them, but enough). Cutting the fat out at this point in Mazda's progression would make more sense to me.

well, the cx-7 & 9 are priced fairly high. maybe this one is cheaper & targeting college grads/ early-mid 20's demographic?

Here's some words (edited & embelished) from an letter to the editor to another car manufacturer in their enthusiast rag and I think it aptely applies with the continuing direction from Mazda as exemplified by this entry...

"{Mazda}... is at a crossroads in product, marketing, technology - and thus it's very identity ... record sales and after tax profits are impressive."

"{Mazda's} top priority is to move iron... and it definitely does know who it's customers are - namely anyone who it can convince to buy or lease the product. And if this means {SUVets, SUVs, or whatever} so be it."

"...enthusiast clients are being replaced threefold with the new breed of buyers... you know the ones who care more about ipods, touch screens, {comfy seats} and the auto as a rollling living room."

That being said, I think this is the one of the best of these vehicle types that Mazda has come up with.

MMmm, it is a photoshop Hakaze, the same background pic is posted somewhere here, I think its a little TOO sharp, the BMW 'block of cut cheese' look as I call it.

Perhaps it could have the new RE Hydro with 40% more power and better MPH "Miles Per Hydrolitre" gains over the old outdated RX-8 Hydro Rotary!...
