TORONTO, Canada - February 16, 2005
The Audi A6 sedan emerged from a field of 36 competitors to claim the inaugural World Car of the Year award at a ceremony held here today, during the media preview for the Canadian International Auto Show.
"The concept of national borders is now almost non-existent in terms of where vehicles and their components are designed, engineered, developed, and built ... or where they are sold," said British automotive journalist, Graham Johnson, who is co-chair of the award program.
"Considering the ever-increasing globalization of the automotive industry," he added, "the concept of a World Car of the Year award program was inevitable ... it is truly an idea whose time has come."
The stated purpose of the award is to recognize and reward automotive excellence on a global scale, and to make consumers aware of that recognition.
In accepting the World Car of the Year award for 2005, Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice-President of Audi of America Inc., said "We are delighted to be the first-time recipients of such a prestigious award".
"World Car of the Year is a program initiated by, organized by, and conducted by automotive journalists from around the globe," explained Co-chair Gerry Malloy, from Canada. It is administered by a non-profit corporation, which is guided by a steering committee of journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America.
"From the outset, those of us involved in the program have had one over-riding priority," Malloy said. "We are dedicated to ensuring that it is carried out with the utmost objectivity, credibility, and integrity."
By design, World Car of the Year has no affiliation with, nor is it in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.
A jury of 48 experienced automotive journalists from 21 countries individually reviewed, evaluated, and voted on the 36 eligible vehicles, by secret ballot, in two separate rounds of voting. To be eligible for consideration for the inaugural World Car of the Year award, a vehicle must have been available for purchase in at least five countries on at least two continents, prior to January 1, 2005.
"The voting was far more than just a popularity contest," Malloy said. Initially, jurors assessed the cars on the basis of 20 separate parameters, ranging from styling and comfort to performance and fuel economy, to develop a short-list of ten finalists.
For their final selection, they rated those finalists on five key areas of importance to potential customers: Merit, Value, Safety and Environmental Responsibility, Significance, and Wow Factor! - the car's emotional appeal. Those secret ballots were collected and tabulated by the international accounting firm, KPMG.
The Audi A6 edged out the Volvo S40/V50 and Porsche 911 in a close race for the overall award.

I don't know what to say... There's really no way to actually give such an award and have it mean anything IMO. People want different things from their car, I like the A6 quite a bit, but I'd be bored out of my mind if I had to drive one around every day. On a side note I'm really starting to like the front end on the A6.

What an odd exercise, probably done more for the publicity it generates for the outfit giving the "award" than for any real meaning such an award has.
How can anyone compare, with a straight face, a Smart ForFour (a cute, peppy, and very intelligent car for its world) with a Covette C6 (the quintessential American muscle car now featuring excellent handling)? Each is a credit to its designer, for what it was intended to do, but there is no rational way to compare them, and nobody would be choosing between these two cars when it came time to make a purchase.
Better to at least try to break the car world into categories, like Car & Driver does with its ten best list, so there is some rational way to compare the entrants.

As far as the award itself is concerned, it seems to be a "car of the year," much like the MT annual award rather than a "best car in the world" award, a silly concept if there ever was one.
Of the contestants, I'd give it to the Porsche in a heartbeat.

The best car in the world for the MONEY and i love my RX-8 and wouldn't trade it for the world, is probably the 2005 Porshe Boxster S. Had a chance to drive one at dealership where friend works. Better than any car i've ever driven including the new 911's.

A bunch of magazines have already said the Mazda 3 is superior to the Volvo S40 (they share their platforms) in many ways, including suspension tuning and interior quality. Why would the S40 be in the top 3? Doesn't make sense. Is "European ambience" a major category?

Ah, cool. Think you could post the pros and cons you found about both? I've been interested in seeing a comparison between the two. Seems like the only thing the 911 has on the Boxster-S is a slight power advantage, and most prestige.

That's for damn sure.... not sure what the differences are between the North American versions and the version sold to the rest of the globe, but everytime I see one on the road I cringe. As a matter of fact, a co-worker just got one and she raves about it... I had to hold my tongue and just say "nice car, hope you're happy with it" ::shudders::
