Became a Dangerous Driver
I've been driving along this past year noticing that my night vision isn't what it used to be. Thought it was normal- you know, just getting old.
So I go for my checkup because I figure it's time for a new eyeglass prescription. Wasn't happy with the ones I had, and I figured it was time for a stronger pair. Just the normal course of things. No biggie.
Turns out it was something different- I need cataract removal surgery and badly. The funny thing about vision is your brain compensates for so much and the degradation of vision is so gradual you think it's normal. The doctor was amazed how this was not caught sooner, and now that he has pointed it out, I am shocked I hadn't either. He didn't bother writing a new eyeglass prescription. My eyes are so fucked up, no lens will help.
Covering my better eye and looking at a street lamp just shows a haloed and yellowed burst of light. Like looking through a piece of yellowed plastic sheet that's been worked over with a Brillo pad. Everything surrounding it is washed out and blurred. At night at least, I am one dangerous person to be piloting a car. And until the doctor pointed it out, I thought this was normal.
In any case, the surgery is brief, and requires little in the way of effort or suffering. Just a small incision of about 3mm, the cataract is removed and a new lens inserted. Relief should be almost instantaneous
Anyway, if you're over 40 and you don't wear glasses, which means you probably haven't seen an eye doctor in some time, make a note to get yourself examined, before you scare the **** out of yourself, or worse, cause a major problem for someone else.
