Yeah, its not that their bad, but rather that the 1/4 mile seems a little too good for a 6.26 second 0-60

My question is WTF are YOU talking about?

Referring to steering as "telepathic" is as obvious as the nose on your face. If you want to avoid abstractions, I guess a review of a car's steering feel can be one of two things:

1- Good.
2- Bad.

Jeez. I don't know what to tell you if the terms "telepathic" or "refinement" confuse you... And the same goes for "bulletproof", "bahn-burner", "corners as if on rails", "solid as a bank vault", and a thousand other hack buff-book terms. Without entertaining colloquialisms and "lazy" abstractions, car reviews would be as boring as reading a data panel.

My dad had a Talon TSi AWD/5spd. It was a very early-build '90 model, and it was as reliable as an atomic clock... Even with the regular beatings I gave it.

Now THAT was a fun car. Small, light, plenty of power (even stock it is probably the equal to the RX8 if you don't do 7000rpm clutch drops in the Mazda), and an absolute HOOT to drive in the snow. I had a WRC-quality 4-wheel drift in a snowstorm in that car that I still remember like it was yesterday...

*sigh*
I just got done selling mine to a friend. Had almost 160K on the clock, and I'll tell ya...I'm really gonna miss that car. My 1st gen had a few probs here and there, but that car never stranded me, and you're right about the driving in the snow! That one was a BLAST in the white stuff. Had better traction than most trucks! It was hilarious to see this little coupe go tearing by soccer moms who were sliding backwards down hills in their Suburban Batte Wagons while I was boosting right on past. Oh, and the 4-wheel drifts! I felt like Saenz every day it snowed!

The Eclipse became a whole different beast after the Hahn Racecraft turbo too

It's widely known among the DSM guys that the 1st Gen Eclipse was the best for overall performance. Many of the 1G factory parts were considered the *upgrade* path for the 2G guys.

It's a shame when you have to use old parts to upgrade. That's just so ironic.

Hahn Racecraft turbo? isn't that the turbo that gets bolted on to the stock 140HP engine, not the factory 210HP turbo engine? if so, that engine is completley different and not what we're talking about here.

The problem is that these arbitrary terms that don't have a distinct meaning just highlight the fact that 90% of people have no idea what the hell they're talking about. They hear the phrase "bulletproof" and rather than question it they regurgitate it as if it means something special. I've seen the term "bulletproof" referred to that Mitsu engine at least 5 times on this forum. That's just stupid.

If you want to use colloquialisms at least be original.

5 times out of ~1.28million posts on the forum. not that bad in terms of repetition

which is easier? saying an engine is bulletproof, or saying that an engine can withstand heavy modification with little or no internal modifications and are reliable even after prolonged high-output conditions.

i don't see the issue with such metaphors.

Well, on a forum where "your is slang for you're" I suppose it's fine. You could, however, go with normal English and say something like durable or well-built or solid.

If so many forums weren't echo chambers of non-originality I wouldn't have said anything. You never know what's actually real or just garbage propagated by the masses.

you could, but linguisticly, that is boring.

describing everything automotive in such sterile terms would be like reading an encyclopedia. sure, its acurate, and informative, but its also boring as sin (that's an expression i don't get. typically sins aren't boring at all).

saying an engine is bulletproof is no different than saying a dead person has kicked the bucket, or bought the farm. literally it makes no sense, but the expressed idea is understood by the majority...its nothign more than a literary device to make the language less boring.

also, i right now i think you are arguing for the sake of arguing. much like plato you are. much like yoda, talk i.

"Kicking the bucket" or "boring as sin" are sayings. "Bulletproof" is an adjective that has a distinct meaning that has no basis to mean what you say it means.

I'm not against weird sayings and especially not against things like "teh fastar" and "twisties". I'd say that's 90% of the reason I come here. But I've actually seen people on this forum arguing as to whether a particular engine was "bulletproof". They're arguing over whether the application of a loosely defined term is appropriate -- teh stupid.

When it goes from people using phrases to spice things up to people trying to sound smart, it's gone too far. Then again, it wouldn't be a forum without it!

I refuse to believe that someone who can properly use the terms "colloquial" and "regurgitate" can't figure out what someone means when they refer to an engine as "bulletproof". This is a common term that is applied to far more than automobile engines.

This has got to be a joke... Either that or you have a very weak imagination. The use of simile, metaphor or other comparisons to form a picture in one's mind is a common literary device and not at all "lazy" as you call it. How the quite "distinct" meaning of the term "bulletproof" escapes you is completely baffling to me. Does every phrase spoken or written need to be completely literal in order for you to comprehend its meaning?

Again, I posit that you are pulling our collective legs.

How dare you insult my imagination station!?!?!

Where do you get this idea that I don't know what the word means or that I need a lesson on the intricacies of literary devices. What the hell does that have to do with anything?

Look, I'll dumb it down a notch for you -- this is a stupid word. It's a big fat stupid retarded word that makes me mad with all its stupid retardedness.

How we got to talk about similes and metaphors is what I don't understand. I question the application of one stupid *** word and somehow I'm against the English language all the sudden.

I find that people tend to get distracted when arguing. Their ego's create internal noise that diffuses the areas of the brain that are responsible for rational thought. Somehow they interpret someone's point or statements in a way that leads them to think somehow the other party is inferior in someone becuase something was said. Why do people do this? I have no ******* clue. Why can't people argue point by point, refuting and discussing based upon what's said instead of making personal attacks or somehow magically inferring someone's emotional or mental deficiencies by something that was never even implied in that person's statement. It's like people think in some weird binary fashion whereas there's always this "either or" thing going on. So, since you are questioning the use or practice of this, THEN obviously you don't understand it, therefore you're mental faculties are shitty. But wouldn't this suggest that these people are the ones that lack imagination.

Man the car was sweet, it talked to you, "Your door is open","Please turn off headlamps"..etc. For 190HP/240 Trq....that turbo 4 banger moved! But unfortunately the reliability was flawed. Chrysler replaced 3 stock turbos,2 turbo's in the first year, finally the last turbo they put in it was from the 89 Eclipse turbo. Mitsu released a new and improved turbo at that time. After that the car was fine....I was the most popular kid on the block at the time.....while other kids parents had Beemers and station wagons or un inspiring econo boxes we had the hot sportscar that could talk! Those were the days........ahhhhh.
Aww man, that hurts. I've been an owner of this car since 1992, and in beteen I have bult up a couple of modified versions. Yes, the car is a total basket case in reliability, which is why after 14 years, I am finally selling my 87 starion instead of restoring it. Someone is coming to buy it Sunday. Glad to see some recognition on one of the hottest cars in the 80s. Forget the 1g eclipse, This car was way nicer, although way less reliable. In looks, the 1g cannot touch it. This thing still turns heads after all these years. It will always go down as the best car I have ever owned.

I had a 420a in my talon, and yes sir you are correct...they suck bad.

It wasn't that bad for a four cylinder in it's time, but hardly bulletproof.

I put a lot into that engine. Between Oil leeks, blow coolant lines, and eventually a rod bearing. Then when all that was fixed the computer wen out....

yeah, i had an avenger in college, and it had the 420a in it. i was one of the "lucky" ones that had crank walk and killed the engine. my cousin down in florida needed a car, and other than the engine, the car was in great shape. so i sold it to her for $1, then my uncle and her husband "fixed" it for about $50 in parts and a couple of weekends. that held for about 6 months before it happend again. so they "fixed" it again, then sold it and bought a different car.

Oops.

Well, you name those TWO in addition to "bulletproof". Now we're up to three, not one. You strongly suggest that there are others in addition to those... So it appears that your problem is with "automotive-rhetoric", not the word "bulletproof".

THAT is why it appears that you prefer data panels to actual WRITING.

The "bulletproof" term always makes me want to plunk a .50 cal round through the block..."Oh you meant a different kind of bulletproof...my bad."
