i don't think that many were complaining when the renesis won IEOTY in 2003 after only 2 months on the market. same principle applies with the new civic and MT's COTY. i'd have to agree with ike on this one....

The mediums don't need to be similar in order for it to be a good comparison. The award for best picture is essentially a movie of the year award and I see no reason why how long a movie or a car has been out should have an impact on how good it is or how award worthy it is. Give me one good reason why it would matter what time of year a car that wins a car of the year award is released.

Actually your example works fine for his argument. The same problem exists with movies. An excellent, potentially Oscar Award winning movie released in January will often not win. Movies released later in the year (no earlier than summer) seem to hold an advantage. The reason is simple... people are human. The newer movie has more recently been released and thus it will "feel" fresher. Same goes for cars. One released in Janurary was hot then and had revolutionary styling or whatever. The car just released in November has great reviews and everyone has forgotten about the one released in January. There are also plenty of the January cars on the road, adding to the it feeling older and less new, exciting, etc.

I really think it only works that way if the academy voters don't review the movies like they are supposed to. Which unfortunately seems to happen. At least with the cars they bring them all back and drive them on the same day.

I have been a Motortred reader for a long time, and I have notice in the last months how they have become a bias. A civic as a car of the year is just rediculus when you think about all of the other new cars with much better engines/technology that came out also.

Civic didn't make it not even a bit in other magazines, didn't won an award for its engine and doesn't imprese not even my grandmother. BMW 3-series is a more reasonable choise.

The civic isn't a car, it is a line of cars. How is that MT car of the year, they don't pick one, there are two wheelbases (2door/4door) 2 special models, Si & Hybrid.

Same deal with the accord, how is the on C&D 10 best. Look how small the brakes are on the V6 11" upfront 12" on the 6 speed (2 door only) Why bother with the hybrid V6 when Honda could have put cylinder shutoff on all the V6s.

Mini, crappy neon engine & take premium for 115 from 1.6 liters.

It's a car with various trim levels and engine choices, that variety is a big reason why it won the award, and also why it's deserving of the award.

Here are the last 6 Motor Trend COTY winners. The prius and thunderbird are the only ones without differnt engine and trim levels, and the G35 has coupe and 4 door. It's obviously not a new thing for Motor Trend to pick car model ranges.

2006 Honda Civic <different trim levels, engine choices, wheel base
2005 Chrysler 300 <different trim levels engine choces
2004 Toyota Prius
2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe / Sedan < different trim levels, engine choices, wheel base
2002 Ford Thunderbird
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser < different trim levels, engine choices.
2000 Lincoln LS <different trim levels engine choices

^^makes sense(as usual). The Mini's not a bad little car, but I don't see it as a COTY. I have a subscription to Automobile, and in two issues I just paged through I found only 1 Beemer ad. Most of the space is taken up by domestic manufacturers. A lot of people use BMW's in their ads, though(tires, rims, spark plugs, etc.).
