August 2004 Road & Track - RX-8 vs. G35

The latest Road & Track has a good article comparing the RX-8 and G35 coupe. Instead of a shoot-out, they use two authors, one picks the RX-8 and the other, the G. Each then proceeds to sing the praises of their choosen one, as well as it's vices.

I must say it was a very even-handed article. They did a good job explaining the character of each car. I can't say that I disagee with any of ther conclusions.

They do include the traditional points-total method of rating as well, in which case the 8 edged out the G. Can't say I disagree with that either.

Also, they had the 8 0.1 second slower than the G, both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Their numbers for the '8 were, I think, about 0.2 to 0.3 seconds lower than the numbers they generated with an eariler (presumably) pre-production car. So, more verification that the production cars are a bit slower, but not by a wide margin.

Thats cool...the last article i read in that type of format (two authors, each picking once machine) was in an old issue of Motor Trend when they did a test between the Corvette Z06 and Viper SRT-10. Jack Keebler picked the Z06 and Matt Stone picked the Viper. It was fun reading those articles, they would go back and forth over why this car is better than the other. I like this type of test, because each editor can say exactly why they like what car better and why. They can each have a totally biased opinion.

Agreed. R&T seems to be doing this more often now - they recently used the same format when comparing two German uber-coupes (I think it was an AMG vs. a BMW M6)

The first time I recall them doing it was in 1994, with Dennis Simanaitis in the Miata vs. Kim Reynolds in the Honda dul Slo Si (usually known as the del Sol )

The times are in the other thread... looks like the G was 0.2 seconds faster.
