Anyone have experience with 05+ Nissan Xterra?
Looking for opinions on this truck as a daily driver for a freind of mine. He asked me to help him pick a daily driver and this was my conclusion as the superficial best fit.

IF i were to get an suv, i'd get the xterra or fj cruiser.
both look great and got some decent power. xterra isnt the motortrend suv of the year for nothing :p
the 07 should be coming out soon though, maybe he can wait for that and just pickup the 06 model on clearance.

My sister has an '05 Xterra. I drove it from Orlando to Tallahassee a few months back. It surprised me how well mannered it was, and I despise SUVs. I don't think anyone could go wrong getting one of those.

Xterra's are nice. I know you wouldnt buy one for speed, but it has the worst top end in a vehicle ive ever seen. Does he do any traveling off the beaten path (camping/biking/etc...)? Else i wouldnt see why you would want an suv as a daily driver.

How about a Grand Cherokee? My wife's had three and we never had any major problems out of them. I believe they get much better gas mileage than the Xterra and drive a lot better too. I know first hand that they are more than capable offroad as well. Just my thoughts....

Roof racks on the cherokee are a joke, at least the ones I saw. They were rated at 150 lbs which doesn't cut it. And, he asked for a simple interior (cloth seats, plastic liner etc) that he wouldn't feel bad about tossing crap in and could easily clean it out. The Xterra has optional neoprene seat covers which I think is pretty badass. The Cherokee has gotten a little upscale for his demands, I think.
It's also got a manual transmission std, which he would prefer.

We had a base model 03 Grand Cherokee that I used for all sorts of stuff: hauling firewood, lumber, bark, etc. We also have 2 Golden Retrievers that shed like crazy and the dirt and hair they tracked in always easily came out. I was just throwing the Cherokee out there b/c it's a good SUV with decent gas mileage and a strong 6 cylinder motor. But whatever

The 05 Xterra got added hp among other things, so I wouldnt expect any major revamps for the next few years. Seems like a good time to buy one.

How about a Titan?
I have on and i love mine! Great power, tree ripping out the ground torque, more room, nicer interior materials and more features. Can be had just a few thousand more. I was going to buy a Xterra, there nice, but i wanted more guts, test drove the Titan and was sold !

How's the fuel economy on the titan V8? He has an old F150 now, and complains about needing a trailor to pull his dinghy around, whereas with an SUV, he could toss it on the roof. Personally, I'd go crew cab pickup if I were him, and I may well do that in a couple months, but he's picky.

Nice thread - thanks.
Ironically, my wife just test drove an `04 Xterra to become her new daily driver (going to look at it again tonight). She liked it pretty well, but her left elbow hit the door a couple of times when she tried to turn.
That amazed me - a normal sized, 5'4" woman clipping her elbow on the door shouldn't be possible on any normal sized car.... I'll have to try it myself.
It's more cash than I care to pay for a mere 5-seater - 2004, V6, 4WD, Auto(4) - 32,000miles, $16,999US.
According to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm :
Nissan Xterra 4WD
6 cyl, 3.3L, Man(5), regular - 17/20
6 cyl, 3.3L, Auto(4), regular - 16/20
6 cyl, 3.3L, Auto(4), premium - 15/18
Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD
6 cyl, 3.7L, Auto(5), regular - 17/21
Personally, I call that a wash for mpg.
However, I thought the 2006 Laredo was much bigger inside and much nicer than the 2004 Xterra. I haven't seen a newer Xterra - did the Xterra body change much in/after 2005MY?
In particular, the 2006 Laredo had more room between the front and rear seats, but if you really seat 5 people it's worth mentioning the Laredo has a larger "hump" for the drivetrain in the center of the rear floor.
I noticed I could get a 2006 Laredo with ~20,000 miles for the same $17,000US as the older, slightly higher mileage Xterra so right now the higher price of the Xterra is making me drag my feet a bit. I think if they wanted $14,000 for that Xterra I'd be writing them a check tonight.

The 2005+ Xterra doesn't look drastically different. It still carries the same athletic character, and the interior is a little more freindly. It's definitely an Xterra. I, and most others, feel it was substantially improved. Especially in the engine department. I would say it's well worth going to a 2005.

Good tip - I'll look around for one. My wife and I are committed to buying used rather than new so that might be harder to find (or harder to find the value we want from so nearly-new).
Anyway, I'm still surprised that no one posted any show-stoppers for the Xterra. None?
My buddy's `98 PathFinder has aged far better with far fewer problems than my wife's `98 Grand Voyager so I guess I'm not surprised.
Any other current Xterra owners out there want to give good or bad shouts out?

Yeah the Titans come in Crew and King cab.....
My Titan gets around 18 in the city and 20-21 on the highway, the 5 speed auto helps alot. Its so hard not to get on it, the Titans is one Ballzy truck! For a truck its one of the smoothest trucks out there, very tame when it needs to be, and moves with authority if you have to. Looked at Ford ,Dodge and Chevy, i lke all three brands, chevy being the least out the bunch, and none of them could offer the ride, feel, and power. All three of those manufactures have the worst interior materials , so cheap and flimsy, and the build quality is poor IMO to the Titan.
Oh yeah heres some info for ya...Titans also dyno about 265-270ish to the wheels, that right around 320HP at the crank. Nissan underated the Titan alot to show up the other truck manufactures. They may advertise the "305" crank HP, but the truck is putting down more.
I love my Titan.......
