Yeah, I assumed you had the 1.8T. I once drove the Jetta GLI with the 200HP VR6. My favorite of that generation, wonderful engine in that car. I never drove the R32, but the dealer here had a few for a long time. I doubt they sold them at or above MSRP. For all I know they still have one. I have driven an Audi TT with the 3.2/DSG powertrain. Felt like a tank, in both good and bad senses of the term. Very nice powertrain if you just won't have a clutch.
I went from a six to a four with my current car. But it's not an easy transition to make. If you get an A3 you'll be missing the VR6. The 2.0T might be more powerful, but for me how an engine sounds and feels is also a big deal. And the best four still ain't no six.
Sounds like EDL is basically two-wheel traction control as far as how it operates. In other words, it doesn't monitor the non-drive wheels to determine how much both drive wheels are slipping. Thanks for the explanation.
I saw the "/ metro Philadelphia" part of your address right after posting my previous reply. Almost went back and editted it. Stability control would make more sense there. I went to Penn undergrad. Remember one February where it snowed or rained for 21 of the 28 days. You in city or suburbs? I used to take drives north to Valley Forge to get out of the city from time to time. Remember thinking that any road with Guelph (or something like that) in the name was a fun road.
Scion is trying to keep crazy new drivers out of trouble in a vehicle with a moderately high center of gravity. I wouldn't have an RX-8 without stability control, and would also prefer it in all my vehicles, but can't say not having it has been a problem in the slightest.
As for user-reported fuel economy, sometimes it seems like everyone in the universe gets vastly better fuel economy than I or my wife do.
In response to therm8: the GTI is absolutely getting DSG. As with the A3 it will not be offered with a conventional automatic.

Drove an A3 and A4 again. This time the A3 had no options. It handles much differently without the Sport Package, with much looser steering and a generally duller feel.

I've compared the prices, and could not afford an RX-8 GT for what I could get an A3/Sport/Convenience/ColdWeather/Roof. People are getting $800-$1000 off MSRP easily, and in some markets people have actually gotten them at invoice (SoCal).
The R32 is a 3.2 litre 240HP VR6 with Haldex AWD. The A3 is a 2.0T FSI 200HP 4-cyl with FWD. The R32 with cloth was the $30,635, with leather it was more like $32,800, plus destination, and it *was* a vehicle frequently marked up well over MSRP. Note: *was*. YOU CAN'T GET THEM NOW. They're made out of unobtanium. Only 5000 for the US market, total. They sold out long ago, except for rumors of a couple at a dealer in Colorado who's marked them up about $7,000 over sticker. If I could get a brand new R32 in silver or red, with leather, for $30k, I would.

the r32 doesnt have a vr6 moron, it has a unique 6 cylinder, the VR6 was discontinued a long time ago. VR6's dont make 240hp either haha, the last VR6 available made 200hp at peak efficiency. we have the generation of the VR6 before the last(the ones equipeed on the earlier mkIV jettas) and that makes 180hp but loads of torque

It might not be called a "VR6" (though plenty of sites suggest otherwise), but as long as the banks are close enough together to share a head it's still one in my book. It's not a true V6 with two separate heads, right? Then in my book it's a VR6.
