Any VW Jetta Owners Out There?

My daughter has a '95 Jetta 4Cyl manual, and the tranny is shot. What should I expect to pay for an installed rebuild? I'm not up on Jetta parts pricing.

Try VWVortex.com. I think its the biggest VW site on the Web. Good luck!

I'm on there - but no hits on my thread yet. I was quoted $1600 installed, and that seemed high.

Prices have ranged from $500 to $850 so far for an uninstalled tranny. Does this sound right?

I never quite figured out where in the PNW you are but if you are in the Seattle area there is a dedicated VW/Audi auto salvage operation that I bought a used motor for from for my '96 VW GTI. It was the VR6 and it was $800 w/ only 80k miles on it (pretty low for a 10yr old engine) after $100 core exchange. I think the tranny on your daughters jetta is the same as mine. I imagine if the big engine was 800 you could get a tranny in good shape for maybe.....400?

Anyways the place is called: Absolute German
It is in South Seattle.

PM me if you have questions or want advice if you go that DIY route.
My folks just paid $3400 for a old diesel suburban automatic rebuild. Entirely different application, but makes me think $1600 might be reasonable for the labor involved.
I know for a fact getting the tranny off is a bit of a PITA on any FWD car. (not technically difficult, just tight on space and annoying)

VWvortex is THE forum to be on for that brand.

LOL - don't tell me you don't know where the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah are?. Remember Nirvana? What was Kurt Cobain's home town? Currently renovating a 1915 home there.

I have a quote from Absolute at $850, but I was told on the VXvortex board to stay away from their tranny rebuilds. I have a tranny I'm looking at from Vince at LLL in Hillsboro, Oregon. Solid top of the line build, by a dedicated VW nut for $950. I can buy a new one for $1250.

I could just buy a used one off the Absolute lot for $300 - 400, but that is not me. I always seem to end up spending more than I should when it comes to cars.

I should now more today - but thanks for the advice!

Has the VW been reliable? VWs are not known for their stellar longevity lately.

How about a new car for her? Mazda 2?

The '95 Jetta has had everything replaced it seems. It is a money hog for sure. My '99 Passat has seemed to hold up well, but we purchased it new.

Waited to long to buy the Hillsboro tranny - it sold yesterday

Didn't know that about hteir rebuilds. Hell i didn't know they did rebuilds. I would get the used tranny. Seriously. I know those cars and although in some ways they are great, I don't see a 95 lasting ANOTHER 12 years (the amount of time a new tranny would presumably take to break down if it took that one that long.) actually if your daughter learned stick on that tranny it might fare even better.

Hell, buy two, your still ahead of the ball game.

So aberdeen huh? Is the Wishkah the bay or the river? I can't remember my Nirvana lyrics that well.

It's the river that empties into Grays Harbor. I'm not that good with lyrics either, hell Marilyn Van Derbur was Miss America when I was born.

Not sure what I'm going to do yet. The car is drivable, just no reverse.
