TOKYO (Kyodo) --
Major U.S. investment manager AllianceBernstein L.P. has acquired a 6.72 percent ownership stake in Mazda Motor Corp. for investment purposes, the U.S. firm said in a recent report to the Japanese Financial Services Agency.
AllianceBerstein is likely to have become the largest shareholder in the Japanese automaker.
In the report submitted on Aug. 19, the investment fund said it bought a 6.72 percent stake in Mazda. That exceeds the 6.61 percent shareholding of a different U.S. investment company, Franklin Templeton Investments, which reported its share purchase to the agency in July.
Ford Motor Co., once the largest shareholder in Mazda, lowered its equity stake in the Japanese automaker to about 3.5 percent by November last year.

As long as people see the value in Mazda (as long as they don't buy a majority stake) can only be a good thing. It should help fund R&D projects, like the next rotary engine.
it's good someone is buying Mazda's stock. hmm, Let's just hope that SkyActiv will sell like hot cakes

IMO, Renault has been a good influence on Nissan. I think that when they seized control in '99 the sportiest car Nissan sold in the US was the Maxima.
Obviously not completely analogous, as Renault bought a larger share and installed their own CEO. However, Mazda has trouble marketing their cars in the US. Who knows better how to market to Americans than the French? They can sell people canvas handbags for $2k.

also its unlikely that 'French fried' refers to 'frenching' in the sense of "julienning", which is not attested until after 'French fried potatoes' previously, Frenching referred only to trimming the meat off the shanks of chops
