4,703 Mazda's Now To Be SCRAPPED

ALL MAZDA VEHICLES FROM CAR-CARRYING VESSEL COUGAR ACE TO BE SCRAPPED

IRVINE, Calif. — Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that all of the U.S.- and Canada-bound Mazda vehicles from the car-carrying vessel, Cougar Ace, which nearly capsized off the Aleutian Islands in late July, would be scrapped.

“After thorough testing by engineers from our North American and Japanese R&D centers, we decided the most appropriate course of action – with our customers foremost in mind – was not to sell any of the 4,703 Mazdas aboard the ship,” said Jim O’Sullivan, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, based in Irvine, Calif.

The Cougar Ace sat listing at more than 60-degrees for nearly a month after an incident at sea, before it could be towed to the Port of Portland, Ore., for repairs and to have its cargo off-loaded.

O’Sullivan added that although some of the Mazdas aboard the Cougar Ace showed little or no visible damage from being tied-down at severe angles for an extended period, the potential for future problems led the company to reconsider its initial decision to sell any of the vehicles as used.

“We always put the customer first,” O’Sullivan continued. “This drove our decision to scrap every one of the Mazdas involved in this incident.

ALL I CAN SAY IS...What a Bloody Waste...

But, I can understand the "Corporate Image" Issues, and the "possible" effects on resale
values for existing Mazda owners.

Definately the right thing to do IMO. Kudo's Mazda!

Oh, and you all realize that insurance is going to cover the losses anyway, right? Not too tough a decision for Mazda, who may not even be libel. Probably the shipping company is going to take/be responsible for the loss.

Bet that captain is now retired =)

Charlie...

''Although maritime insurance is a relatively convoluted process, the main insurer of the cargo was industry conglomerate ACE Ltd., based in Hamilton, Bermuda.''

I kinda read this as the Cougar ACE was self Insured by a subsidiary in Bermuda!...I wonder if there could be payout problems for Mazda?

mazda employees worked thru a holiday to make more mazda3s for the US and Canada because it was selling out in many parts of NA. dealers had no inventory. this shipment was part of that extra push to get more on lots.

someone i called is checking on the insurance situation- whether it will be them or MAzda that does the scrapping. there is obviously some interest in the parts.

Yep, the Hofu plant that makes the 3 (and 6) goes 24/7 for the last 5 years, would have really stuffed up MNAO Mazda 3 allocation with nearly 3000 Mazda 3's lost at sea....well you know what I mean..
The 3 is a massive hit world wide.

You would think the Insurance Company/Mazda could auction them off to wreckers yards for parts.

Then again, why would they pull the rug from under their own dealers who have a stong business in selling parts? I can't imagine that would be very popular.

While it is a waste to most of us, they can't sell the cars as new, they won't sell them as used and they sure as heck are'nt gonna flood the market with cheap used parts when their dealers have invested in their own inventory.

It is a shame, but sound business.

Somebody will make money off those parts unless they get eyes on them actually being crushed. I'm sure a back door deal could be worked out with the scrap yard for some of the parts.

Cheap parts or cheap as is/no warranty Mazda3's or CX-7's... Are these cars sitting somewhere in the Portland area? Will they end up at a local scrap yard? Any word on that Zoom44?

I'll help out... I'm sure they won't notice if a few go missing Seriously though, I can't imagine Mazda paying to ship them elsewhere, so that would mean local scrap yard(s). Even if one couldn't get their hands on a running undamaged (certainly with salvage title) car, I'm sure you could get your hands on lots of GT bits (mine's a sport model), appearance parts, wheels, etc. if you knew when and where to look. Keep us posted if you hear anything...

Just out of curiosity, were these 06 or 07 MY cars? Ti or galaxy gray (assuming any gray 8's survived)?

I could really use a center console, my silver pieces on the sides are looking ragged.

Very interested to see if they will part out. VERY interested.
