It is a shame, but sound business.

I see no different than buying junk yard (we call car wrecker) used parts.
I think Mazda NAO would have to render the cars undriveable to stop a back yard sales network, or probably easier for them just to crush the lot....
Somehow I believe Mazda NAO would have wished the ship and all the 4703 cars were sunk and lost at sea a few miles below the surface!

If the insurance company is paying Mazda for the loss....then the insurance company owns the cars. Mazda won't have any say in what happens with them and the insurance company is certainly going to recover that money somehow. You can bet all of these cars will show up on the salvage auctions.
Large #'s of cars being salvaged at once is nothing new to the industry. Entire dealer inventories have been salvaged out due to floods and other catastrophe. Just google salvage autos and you'll see how many flood damaged cars are available from last summer.

Very sticky issues with these cars...
There are federal requirements that the manufacturer has to certify on each and every car. If they're marked scrap, Mazda won't be releasing the required documentation, technically they can't. It's possible for a third party to do that but I doubt that any of the manufacturers will want to have these cars showing up at the dealer's doorstep in a year for any potential workmanship defects.
Of course there will be some pretty good opportunities for folks looking for a track vehicle thats not going to be street legal.
How this all unfolds will be interesting to watch. My employer ships about $300M in vehicles to Asia annually but we've never had a major catastrophe like this. A few incedents of small damage which the shipping lines paid for with no issues.

"Some components will be salvaged and sent to U.S. and Canadian dealers for use as replacement parts, Barnes said. Many materials will also be recycled by the company, he said."

Interesting...perhaps some RX motors etc will make their way to dealers?...if the complete car could have warranty "issues" in time, what about the "components"?.
If the Insurance company pays out Mazda..then the insurance company owns ALL components not Mazda...as Bascho says.
Unless Mazda NAO are prepared to buy the components back or make a deal with the insurance company...seems a pretty messy arrangement to me.

Demonstrates responsibility on Mazda's part, IMO. Better to be safe than sorry.
In fact, contrast this with BMW, which fixed cars damaged during ocean shipping and sold them as new (as long as the damage was less than 3% of the MSRP of the vehicle, in their estimation).
