mazda focus all their energy in the RX-8 continue development and the MX-5, so no rersorces for the RX-7 the 4th gen RX-7 has been seating in a storage area in japan for 2 years, there is a memeber on this board that used to work for mazda japan and he saw it (I belive him because all my sources tell me the same).

What mazda needs is a light, 16,000 to 20,000, 2 door, 4 seat ,rotary rwd car and ( I cant belive im saing this) a piston version too to spread cost.

A piston engine in an RX-7, that's blasphemy!!!

As I've always said in all these RX-7 threads. If one comes back, I think it would have to be priced much higher than the RX-8. Reason being, the 8 is already very light for what it is, is extremely capable on the track against near any price segment (lets not argue over power), and is affordable. No need to muck the waters with another car in the same price range. Nissan says they're bringing the GT-R and it will be much more than the Z in cost, Acura is rumored to be bringing the next NSX - I think the next RX-7 should be in the same price category. Make it a Halo car that draws in the crowds to buy the rest of the Mazda line-up.

Screw the halo expensive rx7. Once upon a time in the intro in the mid 80's it was an affordable sports car. Why do you think it died in the states, when it went from being 20k to 40k in one model change. If they make the car 45-65k screw mazda. i want the affordable sports car, like it used to be. Not all of us have the money for multiple cars or 50 thousand dollar rides.

I never said rx-7 and most rotary cars have piston engine counterparts

let me ask you: if mazda build a car in the 2600 lbs rage with 200 hp rotary, rear wheel drive that seat 4 semi confortable, handle like a dream, looks cool and cost only 16,000 to 20,000 will you buy it?

Well they could do that with the 240hp Renesis, but yeah that'd be a good bang for buck. In the 70's mazda had boinger counter parts but not since then that I'm aware of. If they bring back the RX-7.... I'd like to see a 3 rotor Renesis on the RX8 platform with the extra rotor being to the rear, a hatchback styling, and a $40g price tag would not be unreasonable. Nice thing for the people whom actually race their rotary cars, 3 rotors could be approved for racing now that we would technically have a 3rotor made available in the US.

I was at my dealership the other day, my girlfriend bought a '06 mazda6, and was told by my salesman that 07' RX7 is in the works as a 2dr coup/conv. to compete more with the 350Z. Also said that it may be turbo with piston engin! So take this as you may, but I told him he was full of crap.

the thyng is that mazda knows if it builds a 40,000 car the market is prety small, what they want to do is create a rotary consumers group by introducin as much people as posible to the rotary, they know that ones you own a rotary most people dont want a piston engine anymore, so make a cheap rotary car that most young people can buy that is FUMN then this people grow, get better jobs and can afort a 40,000 sports car.

a 16,000 to 20,000 rotary sports car that seats 4 and looks good, 500,000 sold world wide easy.

good point... RX designation means ROTARY engine

I thought the only reason we don't have a 3 rotor engine is because of emissions (not to mention gas usage). Can they make one street legal at this point?

Ok then lower the price of the RX8 and make it the cheapo car (talk bout bang for buck... good by SRT4's). Then make the RX7 range from $30g to $40 to keep it under the new vette's, comparable to Mustangs, 350z's, and used M3's n Vettes. If I could have a new RX7 for the price of a used M3 or Vette it'd be an easy decision. I definitely wouldn't get a Vert tho... keep the boinger in the Vert and the Rotary in the hatch.

As you know Mazda have alredy been down the path of a piston/rotary model range in the 70s and 80s. I doubt that they will ever go back to that formula again, sure it can help reduce production cost, but, one tends to compete with the other in some markets.

They will continue if the RENISIS remains a success with the specialised vehicles for it. Its almost impossible to engineer a 50/50 weight dist. car with a rotary/piston option unless you handicap one or the other..weight.

Would love to see a small MX-5 rotary though!...an RX-5 anyone..

there allready was a RX-5

The RX-3 was a very suscesfull little car, dont have the #'s but I know it dit ok.

Not only can mazda make the car piston and rotary power but they can make it rwd for rotary and fwd for piston, remember mazda is a company run by enginier's and they have the tecnology and mazda never takes the easy way out they love a challenge

The car will be piston with a rotary twin and will be a blast.
