Well, it looks a lot better than the 745Li, which, to my mind, is one of the most hideous cars on the road. Still think the 5er looks like a Toyota on steroids and i drive is a lousy interface. The smg is a joke, an auto or regular manual will be better. The smg does not shift well in auto mode, and most buyers will use it there. IMHO BMW has taken a turn for the worse and Benz is going to eat their lunch - make mine an E55!

bungled(bangled) it by the looks of the pic but i reserve final judgement until i see it in person. the newer cars don't seem to photograph well.

I agree with shigginsrx8. I love the styling of the new 7 series, Z4, 3 series, and Im starting to like the new 5 series as well. About the guy that said regular auto is better than an smg, LMAO. SMG is waaaaaay better than normal auto with torque converter, and it's up there with the manual. SMG M3 is almost same as manual M3 in performance. There is that little, very very little difference. Probably less than a half of second.

^^ i think the performace for smg vs man is a tie for the m3, atleast the bmw websites give the same 0-60 times. the only difference is a slightly lower fuel economy in smg.

and that dude knocking the smg, i drove an m3 with smg and really liked it, i dont know why you would buy one only to drive it in automatic mode. Of course, i would rather have a manny tranny, but its preference. i would certainly take it over auto any day.

Some people, esp commuters might take smg over manny for traffic reasons, while still wanting that control for more spirited driving. plus its a flippin cool technology.

and benz is too soft, and to fat.

Jay Leno summed up my feelings on the new 5 during his review as part of R&T's Readers Choice awards show on SPEED channel. "Nice to drive. But unlike an Italian car, where you relish the chance wash every curve with love & care, this car, ehhhhh just throw it in the car wash" He wasn't crazy about the looks. I hate the style even more than the new 7, and I've owned the e34 & e39 5 series cars.

Jay Leno had nothing but nice things to say about the RX-8 which was also featured in the R&T Readers Choice show.

Exactly...i was just waiting for someone to say that. I used to judge cars first in photographs but now i wait until i see it in person...first i messed up with the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, then the Lamborghini Gallardo, im not about to do it again with the new "Bangle designed" M5. It doesn't look that bad in pics, but no pictures can do a car justice, you MUST see it in the flesh.:D

Well I wish it looked as good as its performance numbers. I use to like BMWs over Mercedes but now I'm back in Mercedes camp. I think BMW styling is off target, I don't like the 7series, 6 series, 5 series, and I'm not impressed with the style of the Z4--they all drive wonderfully but otherwise I'll pass.

Goodness it almost 4000 lbs.!! I like my cars light weight. Beside I don't like any of the Banglized BMW's. Wouldn't mind that transmission in my 8 though.

I was going to say they have a strake thing going, unless that is actual usefull sidevents for cooling or intake air.

I know 4000 pounds is really heavy, but the new 5er actually weighs less then the old one. This is quite and accomplishment considering today’s cars are ballooning in weight.

And as someone mentioned before, it weighs hundreds of pounds less then the E55.

Finally, someone with some taste and sense in here.

BMW is finally getting somewhere with their styling instead of just making the same conservative looking car in different sizes. I would take any one of them, from the 7 on down to the Z4.

In contrast, I wouldn't even CONSIDER a Benz, Infiniti or Lexus. Audi, maybe, BMW, definitely, the others, never ever ever.
