1995 Audi S6
1995 Audi S6
yeah thats right 'S'. This car just became available to me through a german car guy. Its immaculately kept and at the moment mechanically sound, but it has 180,000 miles on it. Its a very rare car though. Im wrestling with the idea of buying it...it would be a really great second/winter car and also be unique and likely hold its value well.
anyone know anything about these cars, or aged audi's in general?

as far as i know audis in general dosnt age well. 180k miles on an audi is rediculous. think about how much it would cost you to fix and maintain it? especially such a rare car. imo a tempting idea, but ultimately a bad one
Time for you to spend some time on www.audiworld.com ! They have a forum section for the mid-90s S4 and S6 (that S4 is no relation to the 2000+ S4). The turbo I-5 engine is indestructible, and they handle extra boost very well. Those cars are great, competition for the BMW M5 for half the price. If you can get a great deal, and don't mind doing your own wrenching as needed, it won't be that expensive - snap it up!
[Edit] - yeah, this is the forum section over there for that S6: Original 'S' Cars Forum

HI there:
I've had the pleasure of riding in one of these at an Audi Club track day. They are fantastic cars and owning one would mean having a very unique vehicle. a sleeper car for sure, they look so understated.
that being said, I don't know much about those I-5 Turbos specifically. Audiworld model-specific forums are definitely a good place to spend some time. good luck!

Back in 1998, I owned a second-hand Audi S2 Avant, based on the Audi 80 model and fitted with the same 230hp turbo 20V I-5. It was a great car with loads of torque (380 Nm if I remember correctly). Nowadays, that kind of torque and turbo sensation can be had with pretty common V6 diesel engines. So much so I found the twin-turbo V6 S4 pretty boring to drive when I tested one (second-hand again) before ordering my RX8.
There also was a 4.2l V8 version of the S6.

Sounds cool...in the future I hope to find a S4, I just love the look of that car and the speed aint to shabby either...lol.
The newer S4 that is...
If you work on it yourself that should lessen the pain of the cost of parts for Audi's. Keep us posted and send pic's if you get it.

How about an RS4.....450hp AWD M3 killer.

No doubt.....but not as bad as the original RS6 Audi made for only one year. The RS4 and RS6 are both going to be available next year......and I think they are here to stay.

IIRC, the engine on the S2 was actually spec'ed a bit differently than the mainstream S6 sedans; handbuilt by Porsche and built in very small numbers.
If I could have gotten a S4...even a used one for the same price as my 8 I think I would have gotten the S4, heck the A4 with upgraded engine would have been fine.
I REALLY love the look of the A4/S4....REALLY LIKE IT. It's the most handsome (I feel weird saying that)...clean and tough looking small sadan I've seen in a long long time.
They changed the new look (the big mouth bass look) and it's OK, but not as good looking as the previous version...then again, I have not seen the new one that much (online or otherwise).
If I had a S4 my goal would be to cut weight and make it handle sports-car-like because honestly I think the engine is just fine. While more power never hurt anyone...or has it, lol.

B5-version S4's with the 2.7T engine can be had for relatively cheap in the used market. less than the price of a new RX8. they're nice cars overall, I've driven a few. it's pretty common to see modders get 400 hp (or more) out of the 2.7T.
reliability with those heavy engine mods is another story though. and with 3600# of heft and attendant AWD drivetrain losses to account for, dont' expect the same 'feel' as a RWD sports car-based platform will provide.

All S4s, regardless of generation, are AWD. Unless you are just after torque, you're not really getting anything better though than what you have in the RX8. stock brakes and suspension on the S4s are pretty mild, not too sporty. Other than an aftermarket chip for some quick hp, any of the other power, suspension, brake mods for these cars is not cheap!
If you're looking for an AWD second car, you can get an A4 Quattro w/ the 1.8T engine for about $8K. 300 lbs less weight than the equivalent S4. a chip, exhaust, aftermarket spring/shock, and mild brake mods will run you another 2.5 grand. 205 hp/240 lb-ft torque in this (aka Stage II) form...basically the car I previously had:

I see, that's a nice car there...
I like the version right after this one but before the latest one.
This one:
I think this was the 2004 version. I'm surprised it weighs 3800 pounds given it's small size and extensive use of aluminium from Audi.
BUT...let me leave Feras's thread now, sorry for the hijack.
