100 mph in a 55
So this morning I'm cruising home from work at 5:30 am, and what do you know, one of New Jersey's finest pulls me over. I was on the Garden State Parkway in the Woodbridge area. He asks me what I was doing going 105 mph at 5:30 am, blah, blah, blah. I say I didn't know I was going that fast and that I was really sick (which is true) and just coming home from work, blah, blah, blah. The slimy bastard comes back with a speeding ticket for 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. Anybody have any advice for me on how to handle this? Should I get a lawyer? He didn't clock me, but he wrote "2 mile pace" on the ticket. It was real strange how it happened. I was cruising along and I had actually slowed down, then I look in my rear view and see a car approaching me. I thought it might have been a cop, but it was dark, and there are never any cops out at that time. I also thought the car looked like a limo/lincoln. So as the car is approaching me, I look down to see how fast I was going. I was going less than 100 mph. He cruises along with me for about 1/2 mile, then pulls up on me and puts his lights on(undercover car). The guy had a real attitude. Anyway, I already pay $2900/year for insurance, and I have no points. Besides the fine, I'm afraid my insurance is going to go up. New Jersey sucks and I'm really fed up with this shithole state. $2900/year with no points, WTF? OK, enough of my rant, somebody please tell me I can beat this ticket, or least greatly reduce the fine/points.

Go get at lawyer and fight this ticket. Hopefully you can get the point reduced or dismissed. Also he didn't say anything about loosing your license, court date ect.....? Normally when you go 50 over they susspend your license..

(2) Plead insanity.
(3) Reduce your expenses, you're gonna need the money.

Sorry to say, friend, I have little sympathy for your plight. Exceeding or coming close to 100 mph in the dark on a pubic road is 99.99% of the time utterly irresponsible behavior. To claim that you're "really sick" is hardly a reasonable excuse, akin to claiming you were drunk.
Don't get me wrong, I routinely exceed posted speed limits, along with about 90% of the rest of drivers on the road. And exceeding the posted 55 on a highway by 10 or even 20 mph is understandable in many circumstances. But at close to 100 mph, you're way outdriving your headlights. Add to that any impairment you may experience as a result of being "really sick," and, frankly, you're a menace.
That the cop had "an attitude" is really quite understandable.

you should absolutely get a lawer. you will need to go to driving school, if you dont lose your license. your fines will be outragous...you will probably lose your insurance too.

First of all, 100 mph in the 8 is nothing. The stopping time is probably equal to a mack truck doing 55. Second of all, I never said how fast I was going. I said under 100 mph.

wow i'm surprised the police officer let you drive away. Normaly you would be spending at least a night in jail for that kind of speeding. At least you are lucky in that regard.

But as someone that does 300 miles a week on the Garden State Parkway it’s a dangerous road and drivers like you do not help. The COP was doing his JOB deal with the consequences. Also there is something your not telling us

Not to mention that driving at something around 100 mph, and saying "I didn't know I was going that fast" doesn't exactly project the persona of someone who is in complete control of his vehicle. Probably inconsequential to the cop, especially since he was likely more irritated by the fact it is a really lame excuse he hears all the time.

At 100 mph you're traveling 147 feet per second. Most drivers require 1.5 seconds to react to an obstacle they see ahead of them. (Even assuming you're better than that, you're "really sick", so let's assume 1.5 seconds.) Before you've reduced your speed, you've already traveled over 220 feet. Your headlights illuminate about 350 feet ahead of you. So at 100 mph, you have about 130 feet of braking distance, at best, once you recognize an obstacle before you plow into it.
Assuming REALLY good brakes and tires, probably better than you have on your car, you'll need 372 feet to stop the car. That means that when you hit the obstacle you'll be traveling at about 36 mph. Try driving your car into a brick wall at 36 mph and see how it feels and you'll get an idea of what you would experience. Even better, have a friend run you down at 36 mph and you'll get an idea of what a pedestrian would experience.
Now, if you weren't traveling 100 mph, but, say, 90, you can hit the obstacle at about 30 mph. Again, take your car, accelerate to 30 and hit a brick wall. If that doesn't convince you, do it again. Continue to do this until you realize why you got a ticket.

Personally, I'm hoping you get charged to the full extent of the law- since you routinely go 110 it is highly probable you were doing 100 at the time. Lying to us and the cop doesnt make matters any better.

First off Joe Paterno is the coach of Penn State...not his real name. Also yes it's stupid to drive with reckless abandon, but hey he was just asking advice. I have been given my fair share of tickets and its sucks. I have also been given a Exhibition of Speed ticket for revving my engine at my girlfriend...so yes he deserves a ticket and yes some cops have attitude. Just don't flame everyone who comes on asking for advice.

I have had my 8 over a year and have done 100+ once, and you do it every day!!!!!
Odds finally caught up to you so pay the penalty and be glad you still have your car. Maybe it will slow you down and save a life some day too.

Ok, I wasn't going 100 mph. I never said I was going 100. It was just some young cop with a hard-on. When I looked at the speedometer I was going 90. That was way before I got pulled over. I have zero points and I am a very safe driver. It is not wrong to drive fast on 4 lane highways at 530 in the morning. There is nobody on the road. Bad driving kills people. Have you ever heard of the Autobahn? The fatality rates are lower on the Autobahn than on US roadways. There is plenty of documentation that supports my claim. You guys are all crazy. Probably the same people that say leasing is a bad idea. I've driven 20000 miles a year for the past 4 years, never once coming close to causing an accident. So if my 8 can stop faster doing 100mph than a mack truck doing 55, should the truck driver go to jail???
