*!!!Ultima GTR Sighting!!!*

Driving home from a movie about 10 minutes ago and I see a weird *** yellow car ahead of me, so I hustle on up to it. I wasn't sure what it was, but I thought it was an Ultima, so I get right behind it and it was definitely an Ultima GTR!

I'm not sure how rare or how much these things are worth, but it was pretty cool to see anyways, prolly since I never have before. I was expecting to hear a V-10 type race-car howl from it, but it sounded more like a V8 than anything, so that surprised me. Is it possible this was a kit car and not a real Ultima? I remember seeing a vid a while ago of an Ultima GTR that looked just like this one on the track, and this thing blew by modded WRX's and other quick car's like they were standing still, just like an F1 car actually. Any input Ike? I know you have some interest in these things.

Anyways, thought I'd share, I also got 4 pictures of it with my cell-phone camera, so if anyone feels like hosting them, I can send them to you via e-mail from my phone since I don't know how to put them up here.

Kit cars that can use a Chevy V8 or BMW V12 (although I guess you could make anything fit).

In a sense they are kit cars, you can order them in many different styles. Everything from staged kits where you build the car slowly to a rolling chassis, but as far as I know none of the options come with an engine. They are prettymuch made to mate to a small block chevy so almost all them have one, but other engines have been fitted into GTRs. The most common chevy and the one for the world record holding car comes from these guys... http://www.amerspeed.com/

If I ever come into some money this will be one of my first purchases, it's about the closest thing to a street legal group c car. Just for some kicks here are some comparo times with the amerspeed Chevy...

0-100mph-0 comparison times

Ultima GTR
9.8secs

Ferrari Enzo
10.9secs

McLaren F1 LM
11.5secs

Porsche Carrera GT
11.6secs

Pagani Zonda
11.8secs

Porsche 911 Ruf R Turbo
13.1secs

Ferrari F40
13.8secs

Lamborghini Murcielago
13.9secs

Aston Martin DB9
14.9secs

Honda NSX Type-R
16.2secs

Here's that video for you, it's of a WRX giving a Modena fits around a track. To bad WRXs don't handle well, understeer too much, and have no topend

Yeah, you're right it's a Maranello, I haven't seen it in a while and didn't watch it before I posted.

What was the chase car that seemed to have no problem keeping them both in camera range? The driver seemed to just scrub off any extra velocity in the turns by cranking the steering wheel in the appropriate direction. Ray Charles would've driven a better line...even if it was taped yesterday.

Modded Evo, he was giving up ground but kept up fairly well.

I've yet to see one in person so I'd say they're pretty rare. I've seen the Carrera GT and the Enzo as well as most other supercars, but the Ultima is a rare beast that is only for the driving purist. I think you could get into one if you built it yourself for in the area of 50k, 90k if you order the rolling chassis.

That's the beauty of these cars... Rolling chassis for like $89K and it's "faster" than an Enzo. You can buy the unassembled kit of $27K but I think that's missing a lot of the "optional" parts that you need. I'm not sure.

Ok.. so the rolling chassis is $89K and the 720HP American Speed small block (the one used to break the record) is $27K. The average price for a Porsche G50 tranny is about $8K to $10K. It can get expensive. But still not bad for a world record holding car (fastest 0-100-0). I think it also did a 1/4 mile in 9.9 on street tires.

I found a complete low mileage Ultima GTR for about $90K. It had a 650 HP Chevy Smallblock in it. Not too bad.

I'd like to buy one and put twin turbos on it -- that is if I had more money than sense. Take it up to about 800 HP and use it for a daily driver just for grins. I'm crazy like that.
