Are there Miata owners in this forum?

How I wish Miata owners are as enthusiastic in exchange of ideas and opinions as their RX counterparts! I may be wrong and I hope some nice guys here will tell me that I actually am. You guys keep it up! Cheers.

Glad to hear that there is at least one, though not purely, as you have migrated to RX. Nevertheless, still glad to hear from (ex) MX owner. The reason I asked is becos I had wanted a RX but the MX5 was a mystery that I had also wished to solve. So although I joined this forum I bought a NB instead. I hope owners of MX and RX will one day have a joint meeting socially as well as at a circuit

well bro...i actually did join up with some of the local and Msian rotaries back last year for track session...it was fun....

its not matter whether we drive different rides, as long as all of us have the same interest then i think that's the most important. =) right?

there is another HPC track day coming up, according to the Msian Rotaries.....think should be in june or july...look out for that and join up....i'm sure it'll be nice to see a local SG miata join up...the 8s won't mind too..i reckon...all car enthuasists....

i've got some Youtube clips on that day..plus i 'hijacked' one of them 8 wedding convoys last year too....hehe....

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/700927 this is my car page....(sorry to the rest...advert abit!) and lemme seee...the youtube page for the clips is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gIM-3at1Uw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdevI6a3vb4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kQ82zmMx8w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSj08Z80FY

i've always had fun with the 8s...and i think making friends on the streets is better than a couple of bad eggs to settle right?

hope you enjoy your NB...i miss my NA so much.....

nitez dude..

How would you compare the two models in terms of say driving characteristics on the streets and on the track? How much faster is the 8 compared with, say, a NA both driven by the same good driver? What sort of lap time does a mildly-tuned manual 8(since most 8's are) and a NA do at the Sepang on a dry track with, say, AA street tyres or semi-slicks? I know it's a big mouthful of questions and i hope they will be good for discussion as it compares two great Mazdas

Hi there, ex-NA owner here. When I've the NA 4 years ago, the local Miata group do meet up quite offen. Not sure if they still do, but I'm pretty sure they do. You can go to www.miata-sg.com to have a look see.
The 8 definitly has way more power and faster that the NA. Well, for a start the NA stock 1.6 has about 110/130 bhp. Quite a lot lower than the 6MT that I'm having. The Miata is alot lighter, its more touse-able into corners, thus could be a little faster round it, but its more tail-happy. Think it takes more of a driver to actually control the Miata than the 8. Especially the 8 has way more technolgy behind it to help the driver where Miata is more basic. The Miata has a more direct steering feel, thus one would feel a little more connected to the car and the road.
Personally, i do prefer pushing the Miata down the twisties... Its more fun, and that tad bit more rewarding. You can't compare the 8 with the Miata in terms of lap time. There are fairly different breed of car anyway. If you run them both say in a car park circuit (more corners than straights) the Miata might pulls in a faster time, but no way it can catches the 8 on the Sepang track.
Are you looking at getting a Miata?

bro..you asking a very sensitive question lar....8 and mx5 cannot compare...one is a roadster..the other is coupe....the comparisons will be endless.

you want to see how fast a 'mildly' tuned NA can go up against a 8? next HPC track day...see whether you're lucky to see one or two of the msian miatas all done up....they're actually chasing the lotus-es on track thru-out. now...doesn't that say quite abit?.......=)

got time, come out lim kopi. it took me 2 hours the last time to explain to the owner of my prev miata how the whole car setup is all about....
so there's actually alot of things to talk abt.

either way, whichever ride you decide on..it has to be up to your personal preferance, you should decided which car is best suited to your needs. that way, you won't be disappointed with your final decision.

cheers!

bro..no offence...but i think some miatas can actually pull away from the 8s on track. it can go either way, see who spends more i guess.

also, the tail doesn't come out as much as the 8, dun forget, you guys have longer wheelbase...=)

think the msian and some sg miatas can vouch they are able to catch some 8s on track on any given day.

cheers!

I'm referring to Stock. Which was wat rotomotor was asking. There will be never ending discussions if comes to 'who's spending more'. In this case, even a souped up kelisa might beat the 8.

Interesting that your experience with the 8 being more tail happy than the 5. Definitly not in my case. I guess my 8 is more planted after having all the supension upgrading done.
I presume you've driven both then. was yours a NA or NB? I wont be familiar with the NC in this case.

muahahaha.....ok...STOCK different case liaoz.....MAYBE i can still pull away from your 8s....=P

the mx5, can't tail out that easily, because we've got a shorter wheelbase. that is why, alto its also a FR, most drifters will choose an 8 over a 5, simply because the 8 can tail out faster and more aggressively. =) explains it?

I've driven a MT 6-spd 8 before, pretended to be interested in the car hehehe.......and frankly speaking, dump your gear box and ratios into the mx5....and my god....that's all i'll need! the only draw back was that tail happy for 8 lar...and i'm quite small sized...used to driving small compact rides...hehehe.....8 a bit too long for me....=P

alto the crazy nut i was...my mx5 was also planted to the ground quite abit too...i've driven NA for 8 years already and the NB too...NC same with you..no exp yet...but i'd know first thing what to do IF i get it...yank out all that electronics for the stability sh*t so that i can do stunts to the NC!

too bad i sold off my miata already....sighz....so sad....=(

one day kopi with you and then can tok rot....=)

cheers!

You guys surely are lucky to have the opportunity to try both the 5 and the 8. Guys, I've committed myself to the 5 already. I like it very much and though it's not a powerhouse it's responsive and I figure it actually will handle very well. I cannot say anything about the 8 as I don't really have that chance to try the 8 in the same way I tried my 5.

Guess the way to find out the difference from our own point of view and ability is to test it at a track. (Sadly our govt does not take the conventional route of building a proper track when getting involved in F1. In a way I feel that the govt takes a half-hearted attempt to hold F1 here....sigh! I'm sure that their typical mentality is that if it does not pay off they will always be in a position to withdraw from F1. By having a dedicated race track it'll be a different commitment which they cannot be half-hearted.) Looks like the way to find out is to wait for the next track event jointly organised by the 5's and the 8's clubs.

Guys, do you think there will be interested participants in a Pasir Gudang track day organised for MX5's and RX8's in the near future?

roto bro,

like we've been trying to say, the 5 and 8 are two different rides for different purposes lar....no point comparing....

coupeM bro has seen me run at sepang before (and maybe in in sg too...hehehe), and i think he can vouch that it doesn't matter whether the 5 is underpowered or not..its how you drive it.....hehehe......*ahem*

usually you'll be able to see some msian miatas joining up in some of the rotary track days, occasionally some local SG miatas. think i was the rare few that joined up.

PG is a closer place for tracking...but if you want a better track session and feel, go with the HPC sessions....very worth it...you can either do it with an instructor there, a partner in your car or alone.....they are very well organised....unfortunately, the local track groups should learn from the msians...my 2-cents.

here's the link to sign up:
https://www.rx8club.com/far-east-asia-38/malaysia-hpc-high-performance-challenge-trackday-22nd-july-2007-register-now-117143/

we can prob go up together...=)
cheers mate!

Guess you are right, Jondog, 5's and 8's are different. It is becos the two models share a number of mechanicals that I thot it was worth making a comparison. I used to have a rotary-engined car and I enjoyed it. Recently when I was considering the 8 I was told that the engine is almost "torque-less" though smooth. However when you log into this forum you get the impression that it's otherwise.

I certainly will try my best to make it to the Sepang event on July 22 and, should know by first week of that month if I can make it. In fact, I shall try to rope in one or two of other miata nuts for the event if I'm cleared to go. I missed the last one due to some last minute engagements. I like to get to know you guys, whom I believe are good drivers (which counts). Perhaps we can give you guys (in 8's) a bit of friendly competition and, shall be happy to be embarrassed
