Its illegal and yet i know quite a few friends who do it. Well, its ok as long as you do not get caught.

In fact i heard its even more illegal to increase cubic capacity of the engine as it involves tax evasion. And yet quite a few civics have their 1.6 increase to 2.2 (and even 2.3). And the 7s with 20Bs. Maybe a 8with 20b?

Its legal once you pay LTA. Consider it a legal bribe to make the law work for you.

Not only the civics or 7s. Some of the WRX here has been running on the 2.5L engine way before this new 2006 WRX came. The 2.5L engine is from the US spec Imprezza. A few BMW 320 are also using 330 engine. Increasing of cc can also be charge for cheating of govt. Serious offence. If you are caught with a turbo, you will be fine for illegal exhaust modification, $500. The reason why many dare to change engine is bcoz both engine looks the same, and it doesnt stand out like a turbine at your exhaust manifold. I gone thru inspection with a 2L civic, and passed. The only way for them to prove that your engine is not of its capacity is to take engine apart and calculate the displacement. Who gonna pay for that? LTA?

Let's say, you pay LTA. Then will be there any increase in road tax and insurance?

putting a turbo or charger doesn't increase your cc, so road tax should be the same. Insurance, now that's a different story... technically, insurance should be revised too. If one were to get involve in accident, and to find out that major modification was done to the engine without the right coverage, you might not get paid at all...

You can only pay and get approval for fitting of TC, SC or AT to MT. For engine swap, you are only allowed to change to another engine of the same type and capacity. Road tax will not be affected, as for insurance I not sure. Never done it before. I think must inform insurance else they can void the insurance coverage coz u never inform them of approved modifications.

Good point... Insurance is also a big sticky issue. It would be REAL bad if you get your illegally modified 8 into an accident and then the insurance company decides not to foot the bill. As always, there are many other "costs" to modding cars beyond what comes out of your wallet.

They do not need to take apart the engine to test its CC. I know of a machine that tests for compression can also test its CC too.

The only reason the US or Euro specs are of higher cc is to meet emissions laws and yet keep the same power. They are just tuned and produced diffrently than when you re-bore a engine to increase capacity for power.

CC is not exactly everything. In the 70s, Honda had a race V12 engine of 1000cc pumping quite a few hundred HPs.

Guess any Mod will also void your warranty. so if i scrap my undercarriage due to lowered suspension and the undercarriage rust. guess both distributor as well as tuff-cote will void their warranty on it........

hmm..... really need to consider.. haha

well, its nt so simple tat u juz turned up @ LTA's counter tellin the counter gal " i've juz install a turbo sys onto the car,hw much do i hv to pay 4 approval huh?"
gt tis fr cut fr one-motoring site:

The addition of superchargers or turbochargers to a vehicle may adversely affect the safe operation and its exhaust emission characteristics. Therefore, LTA would require the following to be submitted for evaluation:
a) Technical specifications and installation details (including pictures and drawings) of the proposed supercharger or turbocharger.
b) Certification from the vehicle manufacturer stating that the supercharger or turbocharger is suitable for the vehicle on a per make and model of the vehicle.
c) Certification or test reports from independent test laboratories such as TUV, DEKRA, JVIA, VCA, etc. to show that the turbocharger or supercharger when fitted to the vehicle on a per make and model basis complied with prevailing exhaust emission standards.

its the papers tat is diff to gt hold of. life will b much easier for both enthusiats & ROV officers if $ can do all the tokins loh....

Hi bro cuscorex

I was abt the post these hehehe from LTA website. In essence, u need to get Mazda to say the TC is ok for the car, does not affect performance and safety issues etc etc which is ... impossible!!!

So u end up either

1. kah kah lai and just do it
2. be a good citizen and dont do any illegal mod....

Cheers
