costs quite a bit more than normal cars, petrol costs is doubled, maintenance cost is doubled (oil alone costs $150), else it's alright
oh ya, my car costs me $2k per month, including my installments.
this includes petrol and insurance but not servicing/roadtax

Once upon a time, those without a verified source of income could only buy with full cash and only then from a used car dealer as IRS may come a calling when purchased through the main agent
These days, no one will sell you a car if you do not loan. Alas, you need income proof to do that or know a rich auntie or uncle who will guarantor for you.
When I bought my car, the PI 'insisted' on 90%loan but the bank offered less after receiving my documents..sob!

What the hell are you guys talking about? I have no idea about this Sua ku or 90% loan crap is...here in the US if you can buy your car and pay it off you do....I purchased three cars within these past 2 years ((05 RX8 and 05 Mazda6 and 03 Ford Ranger)). All paid for in cash.

Would u pay full cash for a US$85000 Rx8? Thats the amount we paid for a 2005 Rx8 in 2005.
or even US$50000 for a Mazda6 and SU$60000 for a Ford Ranger?

Thing about Singapore is that unlike the united states, you can get around without a car. Worse case you call a cab. I lived in SG for 8 years and didn't need a car. Of course my father had a company car..

And maybe what buys you a ranch in Texas may only net you a small appartment in urban areas. And you own it for only perhaps 99 years which at the end, the ownership reverts back to the government.

Why are you guys throwing out these rediculous prices .....
My Mazda6i was the dealership's "show car" and I managed to get it with 250 miles for $22K out the door, my Auto RX8 I got for $31K out the door ((traded in with $4K for manual RX8 like a month later), and only paid $12K for my truck.... thats $69K ....not 100 or anywhere close to it

Maybe I can help you out. You're posting in the regional forum.
To be more specific, the region is Asia. Which is quite far away from Chinatown in downtown TX. Prices and rules are quite different. Even the currency is different.
So before you start to rant on about their rediculous prices, maybe you should fly over and try to buy a car for 22k USD.

Dude, is not like we have a choice down here in Singapore. I would love to buy an RX8 for 30k.....I would have so much spare cash that I can pimp my ride. :P

Sometime i envy you guys in the states for ridiculously low car, petrol and usage prices.
But then when i get caught in the jam here in SG; i wish car prices were double. The prices of cars nowadays are half of what it uses to be. I paid about S$145k or US$90k for a civic in 1997 . And the trend nowdays is into budget cars; which made cars even cheaper. Just see how congested the road is now.
30k? I paid S$27k for the certificate of entitlement for my previous car. And my insurance and road tax was S$4.5k.

I remember someone saying that car ownership in Singapore is the highest in the world. Its really due to all the tax and COE, before the consumer even can lay his/her hands on a car.
If not for these cost disincentives, Singapore roads are not "drivable", since almost everyone will be able to afford one.
Like everyone else on the island, I find the prices of cars harsh, but it can't be helped. At least, it keeps car ownership to those who can afford to have a car.
To answer dtorre's statement:
Prices of cars are not ridiculous, but meant to be as such for the purpose of controlling car population. Singapore is not a state in the USA. Its just a tiny red dot in the South East Asia. Not everyone can afford a landed property and have their own personal parking space, in Singapore.
In Singapore, if you own a car, chances are your car will be parked in a public carpark vulnerable to all possible forms of vandalism.
Who wouldn't want to enjoy lower cost of car ownership? It so happens that people in Singapore don't have a choice. The Singapore govt even went to the extent of placing legislation on barring Singaporeans/ PRs/ residents from driving cheaper foreign registered cars (especially, those from Malaysia).

anyway, just try to see things in different angle. give u an example, singaporeans like to say everything is 'cheap' when they go to msia. u cant compare a durian and a duku. ask u a couple of questions:-
do u think msia car is cheaper as compare to sg? let's exclude out protons (bcoz no import tax).
do you think property in msia is lower or higher compare to sg?
do u think a tin of milo or milk powder is cheaper in msia or singapore?
your cousin may hv just paid USD55k but do you know how much income tax he has to pay? as compare to you?? singapore is one of the lowest la, u shud thank god and thank the govt.
