It's a rotary engine....that's called the New Smell Period (NSP)...also known as the Never Stop for Police period....

it is probably new car smell as most parts underneath the bonnet are still new and got heated up for the very first time. try smelling the tires and brake ... u may find somethng too heeheehee ... Monitor it for a while longer ! anywat, no worries la, let the problem surface now rather then later and get the PI to fix it FREE !

It happens with all new cars for at least the first month.

Also happens when you change bodykit or spill liquids on the engine.

double check to see if you have not caught a plastic bag under the car and is being heated up by the exhaust.

I am having this smell now. The silly mechanic spilled my precious oil on the engine. Always happens; its quite difficult to fill oil with the filler in the middle of the car. And its even more difficult with my bodykit.

Anyway don't worry. 99% no problem. Your old corolla may not smell the same maybe because it heats up less than the 8 or it smell lesser.

I understand that feeling. I know all new car smells in the first month and yet whenever i buy a new car and i smell it, i will call the saleman only to have him reassure me this is normal. Its just new car anxiety.

If rubber smell, then you have to be careful, because the engine mounting rubber might be melting due to you left your car ideling for hours with engine on and the engine compartment getting very hot.

I have got my engine mounting changed already, and understand this is comment for RX8. Same thing it got rubber buring smell and the a few week later the engine started to vibrate, it get worst until you replace the engine mounting which cost arond S$380 for parts and laboure.

Never left your car engine on for hours, when you stop switch off the engine. Otherwise the engine will get very hot. Rotary Engine is alway very hot.

Would suggest you go to kinokuniya to buy the RX8 Magazine: Hyper Rev Vol.110, it will tell you what are the very important thing to do with your new 8.

1) Fix two defi meter: 1 Oil temperture and 1 Water temperture.

Oil temp will give you warning indication not to overaft you engine, when it hit 120 degree stop pushing your car anymore, as it will hurt the engine.

Water temp is very important for RX8, as if over 105 degree, you better stop the car and look at the temp before switching off the engine, if the temp continue go up then no choice switch off the engine, too hot will hurt the engine seal, that will cause oil leak.

2) Fix an additional oil cooler on the front right, as the original one on the left is still not enought, because it need two to bring down the engine heat.

3) If you are auto, please fix a Auto Transmission Cooler, so the the transmisson are less stress with heat.

Once all the above is done, then you consider doing other MOD on electric, 18' rim, shock and etc..............

Upgrade should come slowly maybe every few month then you will enjoy your RX8.

Jason

i had this problem before,

1. plastic stick on your exaust

2. new or burnt out engine oil

3. must be your new car smell. the thing they used for anti corrusion. when ur car put out the heat, it make the protection layer smells.

A few have reported this, though I've been lucky and never had it. I still can't figure how the burning smell travels with the A/C line....anyone?

maybe if you off the air recirculation, you may get the smell from outside?
if you use the recirculation for the air-con, i think should be fine.

No mate, that's the obvious solution....the A/C problem cited is more involved than that, but thanks for posting your view.
