Tell me I've got this wrong...

...but is the UK RX-8 really going to arrive hear with 228bhp and weighing 1425kg?

160bhp/ton?

Do you get a free donkey stuffed in the boot to give that kerbweight?

Or do they strap bricks to the underside?

Ah well, when it was 250bhp and 1300kg it seemed like a good idea but I'll be taking my leave now. My 2001 Civic Type R can beat that figure with ease.

Quite how they got a 0-60 of 6.4 is anyone's guess. Strapping it to the bonnet of a R34-GTR?

If they ever do a properly fast version then can someone PM me.

In the meantime, I'm going to look at some insane cars now. Found a 3 year old, 15,000 mile Corvette 5.7 V8 for the same price:D :D :D :D

Same weight, 340bhp and lower running costs

I was very surprised at the kerb weight fiqure quoted in the article, I had read that this would be increased from the 1300kg but I didn't think it was by that much.

I can understand your comments, but a Corvette? Dont live near any corners do you? Like plastic american interiors!?!

Try a used M5.. Some great car for the money out there, if you can live with being a BMW driver.

I'll be waiting for the 8. Having read all the reviews so far, and watched video's it's quick enough for me. Maybe I'm getting old, or the traffic is getting worse...

For *some* reason :o Mazda does not "officially" disclose the weight of the RX8. They can disclose the leg room for the rear passengers, but not the weight.....

Anyway, I dont know about you, but in Greece we are getting the 240HP version with the 6-speed box.....if the weight is correct, I am guessing that the RX8 should be good enough for slightly better times than the FC TII.......but nowhere near the FD times

Which article was this figure quoted in?

The figures I have seen so far are 1365kg for the US car and 1310kg for the Japanese model.

The US measurement includes all major options so is pretty much a maximum, and I'm guessing the Japanese figure is the absolute base model. I can't see how we would be anywhere near 1425kg. Looks like an error to me.

The 1425 weight figure includes 75 kg for the driver, and petrol (not sure how much , 1/2 tank).

And anyway, what is this "228BHP" or something ? I thought there were only two versions: 192HP and 240HP

Or is this 228 measured in WHP ?

... and if 30 litres of petrol is approx 30kg (similar density to water?) that brings us back down to 1320kg. Which is about what we were all expecting isn't it?

Nope theres a 192ps

And a 231ps (was 240ps).

And a PS is just less than 1 hp , so 231ps = 228.9 hp or so.

So, 240HP for 1320Kg ? Not bad, a bit better than the power/weight ratio of the TII, so a 6.4 for 0-100kph is more than logical.....

.....however, I would much like to go for a nice FD, cause with some basic mods (less than 500EUR), you could achieve sub-5" times :D

hmm, again... If your solely interested in the fastest thin with 4 wheels you can get for £££ then dont buy the RX-8., because its now that.

Its a refined sports car that seats 4, I hope

Hmmm, my post should probably go into the "Dont testdrive a S2K...." thread
I do know what the RX8 is, and what kind of people its aiming at...however I do find it strange that Mazda discloses almost everything about the RX8 EXCEPT its weight and its times.........anything would do: 0-100, 0-400, 80-120, anything just to have an "official" idea.....

They have, I've seen official figures on its weight and 0-62 times.

I havnt seen any official 20mph split or 0-100mph or 1/4mile etc but that data is around too.

Well.................

The 0-62 of 6.4 is fast enough for me, who needs more?

If I wanted mind numbing 0-62 without the "looks" I would buy a "scooby" or an "evo".

If I had the money (and I don't) I'd need to spend at least 45k upwards to get in the 5's, for what?

I love the 8 for what it is and rest my case.

Cheers

Erm, I need more :D
Mind-numbing 0-100kph is easily attainable with an FD
And you dont need to spend 45K, 25K can get you a VERY nice '99 SpiritR FD

This is correct, the curb weight is 1350kg (1425-75kg for driver)

With 228 bhp this gives 169 bhp/ton

To put this into perspective, here is a list of other cars showing their relative bhp/ton for comparison:

Evo VIII - 199
S2000 - 191
Boxster - 182
Alfa 156 GTA - 180
Impreza WRX STi - 176
RX8 - 169
Focus RS - 169
Civic TypeR - 166
TT225 - 164
Golf R32 -163
Impreaza WRX - 161
Celica T Sport - 158
BMW 330 - 153
X-Type 3.0 - 151
A4 3.0 - 146

All in all the RX8 has a respectable position in the list .Im hoping that we will be able to up the power to 250bhp with some aftermarket mods which would give a respectable 185 bhp/ton.

Cheers
Mark

............
For Germany, weight figures include all fluids (oil, water), 75kg for the driver and the weight for a fuel load of 90% of the car's capacity.
That could well be a European regulation, but I am not sure.

That would probably be 50kg or so of fuel (65*0.9*0.9)

So 1425 - 75 = 1350 - 50 = 1300kg.

Still way of a caterham
