Mazda targets younger audience with new site
By David Webster, London, Revolution UK Online, February 25, 2003
Mazda Motors UK is launching a pre-order website for its Mazda RX-8 sports car model.
The online pre-sales drive marks a new direction for Mazda Motors UK to target a younger, net-savvy audience. It aims to generate over 1,000 pre-orders through the web before the Mazda RX-8 becomes available through the dealer network in July this year.
The pre-order website, going live at mazdarx8.co.uk from February 27, aims to give car lovers the chance to put the new model through its paces.
It lets prospective buyers to reserve the exact specification they require and be first in line to take delivery of the new sports car by paying a £1,000 holding deposit directly through the web.
Digital agency Syzygy UK designed and built the site, which will be rolled out to other European countries in coming months. The pre-order site will also integrate data into the Mazda Motors UK CRM, sales planning, dealer management and finance systems to deliver a complete customer experience.
Michael Davey, CRM manager at Mazda Motors UK, said: "The RX-8 pre-order site is a ground-breaking addition to a website aimed at both serious and wannabe sports car lovers alike.
"It communicates the energy and excitement of the new model, as well as offering every bit of information a customer might need plus the functionality to place a pre-order and be one of the first people to own the new model."
Stephen Priestnall, managing director of Syzygy UK, added: "We'll be measuring the success of the new module by the number of pre-orders generated, which will provide real benchmarking insight into success of the internet channel."

Yeah, the site does look good.
Spec's seem to be the same, so that is some relief.
Also, the streaming videos seem to load really quickly, and the quality isn't that bad either.

The new site includes the following:
Performance
When you buy the new Mazda RX-8, you’ll be able to choose from two variations of the RENESIS power-train: The High Power specification (177kw@8200rpm with a 9000 rpm limit) and the standard power unit (141kw@7000rpm with a 750 rpm limit). Both offer breathtaking performance with exceptional handling and road holding.
It is going to be very very quiet with a 750 rpm limit.

I'm glad the pre-order site is taking so long to go live. It means there is no chance of anybody jumping the queue in front of the dealer orders.
Also, try the new screensaver. Enough to make everyone at my work jealous. But sorry Titanium fans, we Velocity Red orderers get to drool over our very own car on the screensaver for the next few months!

Just logged on and corrected some of the personal details the dealer had got wrong.
Also removed the 'pass my address onto everyone else' check box.
:D
It let's you change the specification of your car so you can still change your midn if you want.

Order Amendments
You may not want to play around with your order unless you need to, as per the pre-order FAQ's on the site.
If you change your order once you have placed it on the website or at a dealership you will only be allowed to change your order once. If you do change your mind you will have your order put back in the queue as we will have to allocate another vehicle or order another one to meet your requirements from the factory in Japan.

Titanium Grey,
How did you manage to log in if you placed your order with a dealer. Did they give you a password?
I just called the help number, they told me I would have to log in as a new user.

The dealer was sent a confirmation e-mail, which contains the Order number and password, along with the rest of your order details.
The only thing that isn't listed is the pre-order date, shame because I really wanted to check that had been entered correctly.
